Sovereign XS 8 inch Coinsearch coil question

Treasurechic

Well-known member
I realize this coil is to my understanding not waterproof but is it safe to use it say in wet grass or if you get caught in the rain? I just purchased an XS with the coinsearch coil I hear people rave about it but I need something safe for the beach.

The XS is one of the favorites for many and with the 8 inch Coin-search coil you have a great combo, the only thing missing is the Sun Ray 180 meter, that is if this is the one that's been advertised on the classified and was hoping some one would buy it as I was very tempted myself and have too many detectors now.
Now the coin-search coil when I used it was in wet grass with no problems, but was told not to dunk it in the water as water will get in, think it mostly would get in where the coil cable goes in unless there was a crack in the coil. The one guy I used to talk to in our club said he put some silicon around where the cable goes into the coil itself and didn't have a problem on the beach, but never dunk it either.
If you never used a Sovereign before you will see it is different and remember to have patience as all will say that learn this detector they hate it at first, but after they learned it they love it and have the finds to prove it.

Good luck with it and if you have any question feel free to ask as we have several of us that has mastered this detector.

Thank you for the advice! I have used the Sovereign before but it's been years. I got one from Richard at backwoods detectors that looks and sounds excellent! Yes it is an older machine but when I downloaded the manual for it online it doesn't sound any different than my Elite was. I plan on purchasing an 8 inch tornado or sunray coil for the beach. My favorite size coil.

That's the one I seen too and was very tempted to buy myself as it is one of the best models made and feel you will like it better than the Elite as I did plus others around here that tried them both.

The 8 inch coin-search is the best to learn the Sovereign with while the 8 inch Sun Ray seem to separate better and has more depth for some. Now the 8 inch Tornado coil I have had 3 or 4 of them and never used any of them as I wind up selling them before I can use one. Most claim they work great and I do have one on a extra lower shaft now for the past 3 years and still haven't use on my GT yet because of health issues and look like I wont get to this year either. Maybe I will sell it too as it is like new with no or little use is why I got it for myself as it look like it maybe a while before I can use it.

The 8 inch I got the deepest coins with is the 8 inch Coin-search I shorten the cable on and sold it with my XS when I sold it.

I have an 8 inch coil for my GT. Due to the small size I rarely use it. I save it for the very trashy parks when I need to separate the good targets from the trash

The Coinsearch coil is not rated as "waterproof" as it is foam filled, not resin filled, and does not have the toughened plastic exterior. My Coinsearch coil has tolerated a dunk into puddles with no adverse effects, but I did tighten the coil connector, and checked the coil for cracks and nicks first.

The 8 inch Tornado coil is rated as "waterproof" as it is resin filled and uses a much hardier plastic for the outer coil.

Good luck with your Coinsearch/XS!

Charles

The 8 inch Coinsearch is a good coil. These experienced Sovereign users gave you excellent information. HH Ron
