Sovereign XS-2 pinpointing targets

Stanl

New member
Hi all, I'm a new guy on this forum. Michigan is my hunting ground.

I'm relatively new to the multi-frequency machines. I previously used a VLF/TR (I know....old school) with very good success.
Does anyone have any tips on more accurate pin-pointing with my Sov XS-2 with 10 inch coil?
I also have a Sun-Ray 12 inch coil, will using that coil make pin-pointing more difficult?
I have a Sun-Ray probe mounted and that helps, but the initial dig is usually off target.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Here is some tips I have written up and saved on my computer, pay attention to the 90 degree pinpoint I mentioned as I feel it will help you.

What I have learned with the Sovereign series of Minelab detectors

The Sovereigns are a different type of detectors and not like anything most have ever used. These do take some time to get used to and the biggest tip I can give it DON

Rick,

Thank you for the detailed info.
I do have a Sun Ray S1 probe, and it is helpful once I get within 2-3 inches of the target.
So far, no nicked targets. Not even the square nails I've dug.....LOL

I'm going to try that wiggle and other techniques today.

Best Regards,

I think that most pinpointing problems stem from these two things....

First of all, you are using a DD coil and not a concentric. The hot spot of the coil is not the same shape.

Second, the Sov does not have a no motion pinpoint mode.....it is alway in motion mode so you can't pinpoint the same way that you would with most other detectors.

These two things together drive a lot of new users nuts . After a while you can pinpoint almost as well in disc mode as you can in am mode. And you can pinpoint very tight in am mode.

Art,

Thank you for the tips.

Yep, it is a bit frustrating with the Sov. But, I won't give up on it.
Cause, the depth reached in my 'target garden' (items buried for about 4 years) by the Sov is pretty impressive.

Using my old machine, a VLF/TR unit that I purchased new in bygone days, is second nature to me.
I'm probably using those techniques on the Sov, so I have to adapt to this 'new' system.
Although the depth capacity with a 12 inch coil in VLF mode seems to be less now than back then.
Could be just my memory too..LOL

Rick gives the good tips. I do the fast and dirty.....in this case, what the basic problems are.

Play around with sound and motion in pinpoint. Get a feel for what the audio does in relation to how the coil is moving. This requires watching the coil move as you listen.

There will be a speed and width of motion for each target that zeroes in on the location.
