Sovereign tones

I have a Sovereign XS-2a. It has the toggle switch for mono/tones threshold. Though I would like to have one threshold tone...I would like to hear the different tones while detecting. My trick is find the right tone by waving a coin or target that has the proper tone I like. Then I would either tape the coin/target sample to my shoe or have it in my left hand to wave it over the coil after I got done digging my last target. Unless the last target dug matched the sample.
I wish I knew how to do this earlier(years ago),as I did have a Sovereign XS-2 with multi tone threshold. I didn't care for the changing threshold and sold it a week later. Big mistake...I know. What matters is I am a proud Sovereign user and really like the Sunray DTI II meter.

some tones can be altered by the minerals , so my take is this if it does not null dig it , but i can shure tell the sound of cans and tabs they have a bit of low warble in them as a silver coin is clean and just a high but i so rarly dig cons i get fooled on tabs and lead

I do that the other way - using my spade which will null and then produce the threshold growl.... by keeping the threshold tone on a coin level you could well be missing good targets, quite often I won't hear a signal but I will hear the threshold tone change. So if its already on a coin tone you miss the target....

That's a good point you brought up about the low tones. Perhaps it would be best to leave it in the tones mode. That way I can hear everything. I mostly coin hunt and dial in a little bit of discrimination.

I do feel that the only way to use the Sovereign is in the tone mode. It is a little tough to get used to the tones for those new to the Sovereigns, but to me once you get to know them I feel it will do wonders for you.
Many people don't have the patience to get to know the Sovereign and they sell one of the best detectors around, then turn around and buy one back some day when they see someone do wonders with this detector and give it a try again. My Sovereigns I have used made a believer out of many when with the tones and the meter reading I can tell them if it is a good target or not and many time they will try their detector only to tell me it is trash or no signal, then I surprise them with a nice coin when I dig it up. After a while you will be able to swing the coil right along and when you hear the hint of a good target it will stop you in your track as you will know it is one you want to check out while all other tones you will not even phase you, takes time and getting out to use the Sovereign and the more you use it the more you will learn about the Sovereign and the easier it becomes.

Good luck and we will be waiting to see some great coins found by you and your Sovereign.

Thanks for the reply,Rick. I greatly appreciate you and others helping me out. You described me to a 'T' in your response. I once had a new Sovereign XS-2 back in the day(late 1990s). I sold it due to not wanting to learn and understand the tones. The area I hunted had quite a bit of surface trash. I was using the 10" BBS coil if I remember right...it's been some time back. I currently got a Sovereign XS-2a off Ebay that wasn't used very long and in like-new shape. I have the original Coinsearch BBS coil and Sunray S-12 ultra depth solid white coils for it. I also picked up a Sunray DTI II meter so I'm good to go. Just waiting for rain and cooler temps. I did have another Sovereign XS-2a a few years ago and it did really well for me in a church side yard. I found some deep low conductive targets for it. A gold cufflink and 1927 literacy award. Not to mention some shield nickels. I was using a DTI II meter back then as well. I seem to have had better luck with the Sovereign than the Explorers when hunting for nickels and gold.
Thanks again Rick and you are an asset to this forum. Come to think of it...you've helped me in the past as well. I hope you get better and continue to swing a Sovereign for a good long time! Are you anywhere near Fargo? There is a Treasure Island coin shop there I'd like to visit.

You got some good coils as the coinsearch is one of my favorite coil and that older style S-12 coil is the one I was using when I got those deep coins around a old merry go round everyone had missed plus myself for years. I feel you will do fine with the Sovereign this time.

Yes I know the guys at Treasure Island as I am 35 miles southwest of Fargo and they are my competitors now as I was the only Minelab dealer back in 1996 as they didn't want any foreign made detectors in their shop and I wanted to try one. After everyone I sold Sovereign to showed them what they could do in spot they say were worked out they were able to become a Minelab dealer too. I have known the owner since back in 1974 when many of us helped him started his first shop. Treasure Island has come a long way over the years and is big now in precious metals with a brand new building and the biggest vault i have ever seen.

I mentioned Treasure Island, because there is a rumor that they have some Compass metal detectors there. I bought a NOS Challenger X-200 from them 2 years ago. I still have it. I tried to contact one of the owners, but they claim they are TOO busy to do an inventory. I wish I could visit them and see what they have in person. That is why I asked you. Thanks for telling me about them. Treasure Island was the distributor for Compass metal detectors back then. I wouldn't mind picking up another one.

tell you what straker,,,i had a compass gold star,,,i loved it,,,best of luck in your hunt for one,,,p.s. why not go in with some dough ,,and buy the lot real cheap ????
