Sovereign meter question!

Gene Whelchel

New member
The rescaled sovereign meter on my Sovereign XS will not read higher than 167 on a silver coin. Is this something I can fix or will I need to send it somewhere? Thanks

Gene, was the meter purchased rescaled, sent out and recalibrated, or did you recalibrate it? It possibly maybe the internal calibration pot wasn't adjusted correctly when the meter was rescaled. The adjustment is easily done if you can access the circuit board where the calibration pot is located. Does the faceplate have exposed screws in the corners or was the faceplate decal retaped or glued in place?

Heath mentioned some place to start to check it out. I wonder too if you had the meter and everything was working fine as you could adjust it to 180 and more and now it wont means something has happened. The first thing I would think of is if you had it to the beach or out in the rain is the circuit board may have some corrosion on it.Someone had this same problem back a year or so ago and when they took the meter apart the found some corrosion in it and after it was cleaned up it was fine.
Now if you bought it this way, then maybe like Heath says is the internal calibration was not done correctly and would be why it reads as it does.

Let us know what you find out.

you mention it not going higher than 167 on a silver coin ... will it go to 180 at all on anything ?? if not its in need of adjusting , if its only a silver coin then try a different silver coin and get back and let us know .... either way your problem is totally fixable, a couple clues would be does the meter look really used /dirty when they rescaled it its possible it wasnt adjusted properly .........or just send it to MInelab and pay the 30.00 to have them fix it .........I had a meter get wet sand inide and it didnt go above 437 on a 550 meter ......but once opened and cleaned it was flawless...good luck .... are you brand new to the sovereign ??

Thanks for the responses. The meter was rescaled when I got it, it never would read 180, but it used to read in the mid 170's on coins. now 167 is all I can get. I guess it does'nt really matter as long as I know what it reads on a coin. Thanks everyone

I dont know And not assuming anything .. you know about the calibration dial on the back right ... it sounds almost as if it just need to be recalibrated from the knob in back ..you tried it ?? if not then its probally dusty inside and needs to be cleaned out ,the pressurized air works ... dont get to carried away ..... if you use it the way it is it will be inconsistant espically if you say it used to read in the 70 range ....... sounds like a calibration issue........there was a guy on here with the same issue with his recscaled minelab meter, I soon after saw it on ebay ... you didnt get this from ebay perhaps did you ??

Lots of different coils for a Sov. some Minelab and some offmarket..
You have got a lot of info and one feels when the meter was rescaled what coil was used. Have heard when using larger or different coils the meter may need recalibration as just won't reach 180...refer to the fellows that mentioned recalibration as they should explain how its done with an internal pot..You also stated used to read higher was this with a different coil or perhaps if not corrosion may be the culprit.Certainly adjustable by a learned person or even if given instructions by those that mentioned recalibrating..I guess you could use it at 167 and scale your other targets down but would bother the heck out of me...in any case should be an easy fix..

It could be a cold soldering joint on the upgraded component's, you might want to check it out.:twodetecting:

I adjusted the knob on the back and 167 is as high as it will go. I am using an 8" BBS coil, only one I've ever used. If I can figure out how to open it up I will try cleaning it. Thanks

In the corners of the sticker on the front of the meter right near the edges of the corners there are four screws ,you will need to peel away the sticker a bit, they sell a new sticker for 3 bucks if you peel it too much or it looks dumb after your done ........take out those screws and gently lift the circut board .you may see some dirt has gathered near the back where three pins are .......good luck, and dont be scared to send it to minelab, they are a great bunch and reasonable price for soild work ... kinda gives you piece of mind to know it is factory fresh.............

To take the calibration knob and the nut holding the control in place in the housing off too, this way the whole circuit board will come out with the calibration control. Check it out for dirt, corrosion or bad solder joint. Now if this is OK then you can hook it up while apart and do the internal calibration to 180 with the external one in center position. Now it should work like it should and have room to calibrate higher and lower.

Good Luck
Rick
