Hey,
Newbie question again. Can someone tell me what the S1 probe is and what it does???? It seems you added it to your Sov I was wondering what the benefits are?

Thanks Gonzo

Gonzo,

The S1 probe is something that all Sovereigns should have in my opinion. This is a Sun Ray pinpointing probe to help you find the target. What it is actually is a 1 inch coil I tell many that has a switch box that will switch the signal from the main coil to this coil (probe). You use the main coil to find the target and pinpoint the best you can, the switch the toggle switch to the probe and use it to find your target. If it is a surface to 3 inches the S1 probe will find it without digging a plug, but if it is deeper than you will have to dig a plug and then use the probe to find your target. Where this really comes in nice is some of those targets on edge that can and will throw off the pinpointing you spend a long time trying to find without the S1 probe. First you dig some dirt out of the hole, then pick up the detector to see if it is still in the hole, you dig deeper and you may still get the signal so you dig deeper and still no target, so now you make the hole bigger and still you cant find it, but still get a signal, so you dig it bigger yet and have a hole bigger than the coil and deep and no target. Sometimes you may even lose the signal and give up and leave a very nice find in the ground for the next person to find. Now if you would have had the S1 probe and dug a plug and used the probe you would have seen it was over to one side of the hole dug it and back detecting.
I know this S1 probe has found more coins i would have left, found them faster so I could find more and helped with so many iffy signals that were very deep coins I would have lost the signal when I dug the first plug and dirt out of the hole.
The S1 probe is well worth what it cost for what it does. I would be lost without my S1 probe on my Sovereigns.

I see you have one of those shaft mounted adjustable meter mounts, and the meter piggybacks on top of the probe box. Looks like a nice setup. The wiring does look like a Chinese knot trick. I like where the probe mounts. When you get out to give it a run come on back and post a report on swinging, weight, all the details. I'll be interested and I'm sure others also. Happy probing. Don

I use a cheap hand pinpointer to find those crusted black coins in the dirt pile after I pop them out. Bad Eye sight don't ya know. Those dimes just hide themselves in black dirt/sand.
I can see by your report that a good probe is a whole different ballgame. You've sold me on the need and the method. HH Don

The first accessory a person gets before any coils is the S 1 probe.
We had a hunting buddy that said he didn't think he need one as he could find the target sooner or later, but it seem like after watching the guy spend so much time on finding a target one of us would go over and find it for him with our S 1 probes. Sometimes it was deeper than he was digging, sometimes it was off to one side of the hole and many times he gave up on it as he lost the signal. He still said he didn't need a S1 probe. Well his wife wanted to get him something for his birthday to do with detecting and we thought the S 1 would be something even though he didn't think he needed would be the best thing she could do. When he got it he still said he didn't need it, but would use it. After a week and getting to know how to actually use it to its full advantage he told his wife this was by far the best birthday present she had ever gave him. He told us that we should have forced him to get a S 1 probe before as he notice more finds in a day now as they are so easy to find, deeper ones and never digs a dry hole now as when he gets a good signal he always finds a target, may not always be a good one, but at least finds his targets now.
He has since went to the Explorer and the first thing he did was order in a X1 probe for the Explorer as he said he wont detect without a Sun Ray probe again as he learned his lesson well.

Thank you for a great explanation. I can see how it is hooked up, but when you want to use it you just unclasp it from the next to the meter and use it free hand??

Also, where can i get one and are the expensive??

Thanks again Gonzo

When you want to use the S1 probe chances are you are in all metal pinpoint with the detector, so you just flip the toggle switch to probe and pull the probe off the holder and use it like you would a coil. when done make sure you switch the switch back to the coil as i have learn this from Experience as it does happen as the signals wont make sense you are getting, or no signals at all.
If it was a iffy signal to begin with you can switch the detector back to reg disc mode when you get close tot he target to help ID it, but the numbers on the meter will be off a little, but the tone will be the same.Got a lot of nice finds this way on iffy signals and some I find just null of iron when you get close with the Probe.
The S1 is a $179 probe and they make 2 different ones for it, one is for the older XS, XS2 and the XS2a series and the other for the Elite and the GT. The difference is the XS sits under the shaft below the meter while the Elite and the GT sit above the shaft where the meter is to sit, then there is a bracket on top of the switching for the meter to sit. On my GT I used the older one and mounted a V Clip on the bottom of the shaft as I had a Sun Ray DTI 3 meter and it would sit too high up, but if you have the Minelab meter the one that sits on top will work better and can see the meter much better too.

hey gonzo, i cant let this go by without adding my 2 cents. i have the x-1 probe on my explorer and last week ordered the s-1 for my sovereign GT.
the probes from sunray are just about the most unbelieveable tool you can have on your detector. simple to use. theyll nail your target everytime. when i detect .first ill pinpoint with the detector. dig the first plug. if the targets not in the first plug , out comes the probe. its a must have. i wouldnt want to detect without it.

Thanks Rick and IKON,

I am sold on the idea, I used my hand held pin pointer quite a bit last weekend, but you have to get the tip withing a 1/2 inch for it to work, and I have to carry it with me.

Anyway, I am starting my search for one:beers:
