Sovereign GT or Sov. Elite

NotMyCow

New member
Hi, am semi-retiring to the beach from the flat lands and have sorta decided on a Sov. GT for wet sand use. I have an MXT for everything else.
Went to the city yesterday and found a nice Sov. Elite and a Eureka Gold at a pawn shop. I doubt the Eureka Gold has a wet sand application unless I've missed something.
Is there much difference in the Sov. GT and Sov. Elite in the wet salt water Florida beach sand? Hopefully someone has used both units.
Comments appreciated. Gage

Hi NotMyCow:

I have been beach hunting with the Elite for 2 years with excellent results. Can't speak about the GT but the performance is similar. I use the 10" Tornado coil which is waterproof. You can hunt in shallow water, but you can't get the control unit wet, so beware of big waves.

Good Luck and Good Hunting!

Hi, trying to save a few hundred dollars. Perhaps when I get to the beach I will understand the wet sand problem better. I think I'll get the Elite to work with and see if I like it. Thanks

Hi, In our club here in N.C.(CRABS)Carolina relic and beachhunters society,,,,, we hunt mostly beaches,, I think there are 4 or more GT's and 2 Elite's with one of them mine.. I really like mine and do hunt shallow water,, control box on both ARE NOT water proof so be careful.. My Elite with the std. 10" tornado coil goes deeeeep , Turn sens down to 12--1:00,, no disc. No notch ,full vol. threshold just barely a humm ,, varible sound,, And you should be good,,,, Both are great machines ..Remember to go slow to slower...It takes getting used to the tones on both so don't get discouraged, I have had mine 4-5 mos. and I learn something new every time out.. Good Hunting,,,,,Peg Leg Red

Hi, thanks for the info. I could not turn down 200 for the Elite and once it quits raining here will take it to a park to begin my learning experience. I have a while to practice before we get to Florida. I have ordered the waterproofing materials and since I am only interested in wet sand do not foresee a problem with deep water. Thanks again, Gage

Not my cow, Where are you headed in FL. I live in St. Petersburg and use an Elite for beach hunting. Love it! My club is mainly comprised of beach hunters armed with Minelab elites and excaliburs. One of the guys mounted his elite in a waterproof box that he wears in a back pack. Works great and is noticably cheaper than excalibur! If you're coming to my area drop in and you'll find a great deal of experience to help you along!!

Hi, appreciate the offer. Plan to base in Jacksonville and spend a year looking around for the right place. We are thinking a beach condo, but not being through any hurricanes we may go in-land but close enough to ride bikes to the beach. Depends on what the wife wants to do as long as I can get to the beaches. Gage

Not my cow,
Jacksonville does have a very good club, North Florida Historical Society, that has made amazing old Spanish finds in and around St. Augustine. I have lived in Florida for 45 years and do not recommend living on the beach, scenery is great but storms devastating and cost is outrageous. Ten to fifteen miles inland is a lot safer leaving the beach very accessible!
Good luck - Wally

Hi, suncoast Wally. I agree on being a few miles inland. But, the wife wants a beach front condo. I think one good storm and she will change her mind. About as close I intend to be to a big storm is Nashville.
I plan to spend my time metal detecting the beach and hanging out at a senior center. Sounds good if the wife will let me. Gage

Hi, took it out to a park for an hour and it is not my MXT. Take some getting accustomed to the differences. Seems uh, touchy, compared to the MXT, but will take time and I've got lots of that at the moment. Looks promising. Gage

Sov. Elite with WOT did so great to me since it helped me found a gold 2 escudo and cross with chains in real deep after Hurricane 2004.

I've been hesitant to say anything after a month with the Elite, maybe 40 hours hunting along with my MXT. It's too cold now to hunt much more.
But in the parks and playgrounds and gravel ie, gray rocks, bar parking lots I hunt here and using the various settings recommended here on the forum and elsewhere, the MXT has a faster sweep speed and seems to discriminates better. Depth is not an issue as I only dig 7".

That said, I've got hundreds of hours on the MXT and 40 hours on the Elite. I hope the Elite is good on the wet sand beaches of eastern Florida or I've gotta get a Sovereign.
I'll but up some photo's if I can figure out to make it work.
Just a comment from an Elite newbie

I also have a MXT my wife uses and it is a faster swinging detector and a good one to use if you just want clad, or get quantity instead of quality. The MXT a fun and easy detector to use compared to the Sovereign Elite, but the Elite will see deeper and give you more info on the targets with the tones and meter numbers. The Elite give you the info and let you decide if it is a target you want to dig, but most other detector the detector will decide for you and this is where many good targets with trash will not ID as a good target so you wont dig them.
I think you will find most here that know the Sovereigns will tell you this detector is for those that want to get serious.
Takes time and patience, but in the end it will be worth it.

Hi, thanks for your kind words of encouragement. My intent is to use the Elite on the wet sand and the MXT on the dry sand beaches based on everything I've read. About the only things I have not found are gold coins and diamond rings and hopefully the Elite will fill those remaining voids in my wish list.
Gage

You have to swing it very slow and as low to the sand as you can get, like you are painting the sand. Diamond rings will sound like trash, the more diamonds, the worse it will sound. I found a SET, with 36 diamonds and I am sure the other hunters passed it by because it did not sound good. The rings were 14k white gold and only size 5-3/4, but the engagement ring had a .55k main diamond in a rather large setting and that shape, along with the target being 2 loose rings in one hole, made it sound crappy. Plain gold bands sound good, but, rings with stones don't. I use the GT without a meter at the beach and I dig almost everything. You can't beat any of the Sovereigns at the beach and the Elite and GT are just the latest models of the best darn beach machine I have ever used (I have had all of the Sovereign models). HH, and, Good Luck!

Hi, that's what I'm hoping will happen once I get there.
If I can ever get the photo situation resolved (I need to let the kid do it as they know about all this computer stuff) I'll post what the Elite did find of interest.
After 10 years of MDing I've grown tired of clad and silver and want to move up to gold and diamonds.
