Sovereign GT or Explorer for the beach?

New member
Hello,

I have an Explorer XS since 5 years (an Sovereing Xs2 before),
I met an other beachcomber with a Sovereign GT (10.5 inch coil),
we made some benchmarks with few gold rings in the
wet sand, each time the Sovereign had a better response,
the sound was louder and clear than my Explorer
(10.5 inch, gain 8, volume max, sound 1, manual sens 24, mode deep).

About my Explorer, I can't have a sensivity heigher than
25 on the wet sand because I have some false signals (the area
between the coil and the cover is clean, noise cancel done,
cell phone shutdown), the GT is always with the maximum of sensitivity.

Do you think the GT is better than the Explorer, because it can
work with the sensitivity at max?

For the sweep speed, I read the topic of GraveDiggerMax
http://www.findmall.com/read.php?21,418653,418775#msg-418775,
he said 'GT for working the beach is much faster sweep than expII'
does it mean that the GT has a faster response to an object?
and thus you can sweep faster with the GT than the Explorer?

Sometimes, on the beach, there is a small area with many
targets: coins, jewelery but also many iron rubbish,
if you have an iron rubbish and a gold ring under the coil
of the GT (disc mode min) have you got a 'good sound' (not a 'null')?
because the Explorer is not too bad in this condition with an iron mask
at -14.

The last thing, is gold jewelry responses

i am asking if the GT has a better response on fine gold chain than the Explorer?

Thanks for your reply.

i also have an explorer xs which ive had for about 5 years or so. when i would detect a beach id open everything up and use a 12 sunray coil and i did well but like your saying i did have to back off the sens. last year i got a GT and found beach detecting alot easier. using the shoulder bag i can go all day and im using the 12 sunray with that. now i havent really had it on the beach that much but i did notice the response was fast. i didnt find any gold but got a few small silver toe rings that were close to 12 ins. down plus clads. i think the GT will be my steady beach machine and the explorer will be my land machine.

i hear ya gravedigger. was thinking of selling my explorer but i got so much invested in it with 5 different coils and the sunray probe i dont think ill get my money back plus its a dam good detector. since ive been using the GT i find it to be an interesting machine and much more easier to use and i think it gets the same depth and everything that the explorer gets.
