Sovereign GT found a meteorite? Help me identify this rock

i dont know what it is but i do believe meteorites are magnetic due to iron content and i see no rust but hey you never know....could be some kind of raw ore ....especially if you were anywhere near train tracks... did you find any others in that area like it?

The low tone sounds like gold to me. :detecting: Considering that you were in a river that has seen gold mining in the past my guess is it's a chunk of mined ore that was lost in shipment. Check it out with a pin pointer and see if the signal is concentrated in one particular area.

I took my "Meteorite" to the jewelry store and asked if they could tell what it is it kind of looks like urs but mine has a lot of sparkling looking gold in it. I asked the jeweler if it was gold he said no. I will offer you 3 grand for it.... So I still dont know what it is...

I haven't read up on it much but I think the most common is iron based and that some have a lot of nickel in them too? Also, I think there are what is called "stone" meteors that look like just ordinary rocks and I think might not really have any real metal content to them but are hard to spy because of that.

I'd surf the web for "metal detecting meteors" and see what you find, because I remember running across sites that had info on how to identify them.

One thing I know is that My GT had the Iron mask on so...... I don't think there is Iron in this rock. Otherwise my GT will silence right away...

Yes, there is a lot about ID'ing meteorites on the web but only a good lab can positively ID one. The ones usually found are nickle/iron mixtures and have much more nickle than the vast majority of earth rocks, more than 5 percent nickle. Many have graphite and very small diamonds and yes, they can contain gold, platinum and other metals. Rarely do they have quartz or other silica because they come from the very core of planetary material and are usually pieces of asteroids. There are at least 3 categories of nickle/iron meteorites depending on the amount of nickle. You can buy a nickle test kit at a pharmacy [for allergies] that will give you some idea of the nickle content, but it's not conclusive. You can saw off a piece and polish it or etch it with acid and see if you get the widmanstatten pattern but to see a good pattern it would have to be in the category with a high percent nickle. The problem with sending it to a lab is the ones that do a free test give you no real analysis, just a yes or no depending on how it looks. Yours looks like it has the regmaglypts [thumbprints]. It should have a thin crust that was melted on entry. A magnet should stick to it. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

In the link i provided it shows a meteorite that fell in Texas a few years ago a fresh fall no rust yet looks a bit like yours but who knows ? get it checked meteorite,s can contain over a dozen different minerals . HH Jim

Sure does look like a meteor IMO, but I don't know much about them.

I'll try to get a pic up today of a large black rock I found a year or two ago with melted surface areas. I was deep in the woods metal detecting and found it just laying there where no other rocks were. I was so convinced it was a meteor that I hauled that heavy rock about twice the size of a soft ball all the way out of the woods and took it home.

Tried a magnet on it and doesn't stick, so I'm assuming it's not one. Can't remember if I got a response when I swepted it with my detector. Thought it made a nice flower garden ordament so it's being laying in my flower garden. Curious to find out what you guys think this rock is, because I never saw one like it before.
