Sovereign Dixie Mod

Anybody know anything about this modification?

...I have asked this question on this forum several times to people who have this mod and all I received for an answer was, Daaaaaaaaaaa...I even asked the people who install this mod and all I received for an answer was, Top Secret....Don't waste your money or breath Parked, its a scam.

I had it done. Some like it and some don't. At first I was doubtful. I'm not easy to convince. The tones will be clearly higher. Also the threshold level will be slightly lower in disc than all metal even when NOT running silent search. This was a minor disadvantage IMO. The detector is hotter IMO. Some may not think so, but I can clearly tell. I checked it on the bench and it will air test a dime in the 8 1/2 to 9 inch range with the 8 inch coil on it. The low iron tone is not quite as irritating as it used it be I actually prefer it. Bottom line is If I had it to do over, I would do it and as I said I'm not easy to convince but there's only one way to find out for sure.

Some like it and some don't, for me my best results with the Sovereign is the way it comes from Minelab. On the Mod the tones are all higher pitch which is no good to many of us that are hard of hearing of the high tones, which most are, so we may not hear them being so high pitched or the tones are just too close together to tell one from the other. Also on the older Sovereigns it is switched to silent search, but the GT has a switch for that which also I don't like the silent search as i want to hear everything the Sovereign is telling me when I am detecting for the old and deep targets, so the threshold is very important to me and need it. Silent search I see can be good where targets are far and few so you don't have to listen to all the little iron hits so there is time when it is nice to have and with the GT it can be used either way and been told with the mods it can be too as you can turn up the threshold in disc.
Over all the mods may make it easier to use for those that are new to the Sovereign as it quiets it down a bit, but for performance I like the way it comes from Minelab.
I took and did a test on a XS I had, then sent it in for the mods and did the same test when I got it back and found I didn't have the depth on the deep targets anymore like i had before as the threshold wasn't there to tell me the weak hits on the deep ones. In the Field the tones were set higher and for me and my bad hearing too many trash targets sounded good and hard to tell some apart so I had to open it up and set it back to a reg threshold and set my tones back to factory setting to do any good with it, but that is me and my hearing and the type of hunting I do, but some do swear by the Mods and I am glad it works fro them and wish them all the luck with it, but it is not for me.

Good luck with your Sovereigns

Rick

If you have a XS series detector than there should be silent search too withthe mods, You set the threshold in all metal pinpoint to a slight hum and when switched back to disc to hunt the threshold should be silent. If you try to set it in disc you just turn it down untill the threshold drop off.

I think that it is the greatest think to void your warranty and give you money away,

JHM,
I don't think that you're voted out .....If it works for you , then it works for you !!.....You still win the prize !!...... Rick makes mention on how most people can't hear the higher tones , and he is one of them ......I am the opposite !!....I have my Sov's tones adjusted higher as the tones are more "Telling" to me with a higher tone ......This does not work for Rick with his hearing ..... We're BOTH right !!...... It's all a matter of preffernce .... If there is nothing definite about a mod, and people have to WONDER if it works or not , I"m not buying it .... Honing your skills and learning your machine , and getting out there and EXPERIENCING the hunt will get you more depth and understanding than any mod !!.....Jim

I agree, I thought it was kinda funny. If that's all igot to worry about, I'm having a good day. I think the main issue is getting the coil over a good target

Relic_Hunter, if my mods were a scam as you say, I don't think I would have been in business for 27 years. I was one of the first Minelab Dealers in the USA and have remained an authorised Dealer by not scamming people. My mods took 6 months to sort out with the help from Minelab's staff and an engineer. I do not list nor give out this information to anyone; they didn't pay the bill when this procedure was in development. I've done hundreds of Sovereign's both here and abroad. I personally have owned and used every model of Sovereign and consider it to be one of the most versatile detectors ever made. I do not hunt with a stock model myself. Furthermore, I have a standing offer to anyone; if your unhappy, return it and I will return your Sovereign back to original. Since 1992 other than readjusting to lower tones, I have yet to have anyone take me up on this offer. I do not scam people, nor lie to them. Just because you don't have a clue, doesn't make you an authority.

Good hunting,

I have dealt with David for many years and he is as honest as the day is long! And, he probably knows the Sovereign better than any man alive! He taught me alot about the Sovereign and has given me great advice over the years. I consider him and Rick in ND the two best Sovereign men and everyone could do well to listen to both of them! As Rick said, it may not be for everyone, but after having David modify my first Sov, I could tell the difference and it was a great machine. Enough said, Bill Quinn (aka Plugger).

David did the dixie mod on my sovereign GT a year ago. I am totally satisfied with the mod. He is the real deal, a class act. GH, Don

So does it offer more depth and is more than just a tone change? I'm just asking and and figured straight from the horses mouth is the best source. Thanks.

I can't speak for everyone I've provided the mod for, but for myself and those that have kept in contact with me, yes. Many reported finding a lot of coins/relics in areas/camps that they themselves called hunted out. It made a big difference for me. The Sovereign is a great detector right out of the box, but like a few other models/brands, they can be made to operate at optimum performance. Nothing new with a number of other models.
Good hunting

David if I remember correctly you were the guy who used to talk about hunting his Sov in pinpoint mode and if I remember you favored the 8" coinsearch coil on it at the time. That got some of us to try and use that mode instead of just using it for pinpointing a target:thumbup:
thats going back a few years now:minelab:
Neil

Yes Neil, now that there are no more CoinSearch coils, I recommend the Sun Ray S-8 coil. Very good coil and the depth is great for an 8" coil.
Regards,
David

I find both the S-8 and the S-12 to be the best for the Sovereigns. The new 10 inch Tornado is also a much improved coil Minelab makes since the 8 inch Coinsearch.
I find the S-8 has a tighter hot band which makes it separates much better and can see deeper too, but the 8 inch Coinsearch had a broader signal and easier for the beginner to learn the Sovereign, wonder if anyone else feels this way too?

Rick
