Sovereign Coils

Smudge

New member
I prefer smaller coils when I search trashy areas on dry land, but I can't seem tof ind one that is made for the Sovereign.

I see the 8" coil made by Minelab and the 5x10" "Joey" coil made by Coiltek.

Does anyone make one that's smaller?

Never mind.

I found the Sunray 5" coil.

So as not to kill the thread too early, has anyone used this coil on their Sovereign?

How do you like it?

The Sunray S-5 is a fantastic coil. It measures 5.5" in diameter and looks to get about 7 to 9" on a dime in my soil or so. Scroll down the forums to you see the Sunray forum. Enter that and you can click on the Sunray banner at the top of the screen to read more on it and purchase the coil. Then there is the Detech Excelerator 6" coil that KellyCo sells. Not sure of it's exact size if it isn't a true 6". Click on the Kellyco banner at the top of the screen where it lists all the forums before you enter one to purchase that coil, as Kellyco is the only place you can get it. The Sunray S-5 is sold by some Minelab dealers as well as directly from Sunray.

Then there is the Minelab 8" Tornado coil which is really only 7 & 1/4" big and many love this coil as it gets deep and is still pretty small for excellent separation. There's also the old BBS version of this coil but it's very heavy and somebody just said doesn't perform quite as well as the Tornado. Kellyco sells the 8 and 10" coils made by Minelab. Then you've also got the S-8 Sunray or the old 8" Coinsearch coil (which is a solid coil). From the sound of it both those coils are a true 8" big. Check out the other thread going on on the 8" coils right now in the forum.

The Joey I haven't heard much talk about in the forums. I get the impression it isn't as popular performance wise maybe as the other small coils?

I swear by my Sun-Ray S-5 coil. This is the coil I use most. Great in tight spots and trash. Great for getting close to metal objects like fences and playground equipment. HH. Matt

Interesting, Critterhunter. I went to the Kellyco website after reading this, but they do not offer that coil for the Sovereign. I went under the "Accessories" tab and only a few coils were listed there, but the Detech was not one of them.

Maybe they were dicontinued?

I have the S-5 and have used it, can't say I 've used it extensively yet, but it is good, can go deep, and allows you to get close to fence posts and such.

Kellyco has a lot of stuff hidden in odd places on their site. The 12x10 is very hard to find on there for the Sovereign, for instance. I'll see if I can dig it up for you...

Can't find it yet, but am still looking. I did see that they have an 8" Excelerator coil listed for the Sovereign. Didn't know they made one for it that size? I heard a while back there use to be an 8" Detech concentric for the Sovereign but heard they stopped making that a few years back. Maybe this 8" coil is listed wrong and it should say 6"?

Can't find it. Either Kellyco stopped carrying it or it's hidden, or it's mislabeled as that 8" coil I posted a link to. I'd call them and ask. If that is really an 8" coil they have listed I think it's new because the only one I ever heard of was the old 8" concentric they made for a while. Perhaps they replaced the 6" with that 8"? Even still, I bet you can still order the 6" coil off Ebay or from Joann Detectors from the UK, which is the UK version of Kellyco. The 6" Excelerator is/was cheaper than the S-5.

You can do what I did and just put a Want To Buy ad in the classified accessories section here on Findmall. That's how I got my S-5. I think I paid $65 for it.
