Sovereign Coil Survey...

OldeTymer

New member
I would like to know which medium sized (approx. 8") coil you prefer on your Sovereign/Elite/GT, and why?

Thanks for your help,
OldeTymer

I am a fan of the 8 inch coinsearch, it gets deep and it really makes the different tones come to life ..... the only knock is that it isnt waterproof, but the target seperation is superb and I find I can hunt over the edge of the sidewalk and it will pick out targets that are up against or even under the lip of the concrete, I love that coil......

I feel the 8 inch coinsearch is the easiest to use and understand the Sovereign, tones seem to be easier to hear and it has some great depth once you know your Sovereign. Now the S8 of Sun Rays is probably the better coil once you know your Sovereign well. This coil is waterproof and in my opinion may have a smaller hot band in the coil so that it can see targets closer together, so separation is better. I also found I can run my sensitivity higher thus getting more depth. With the S8 I didn't need my 5 inch coil anymore as it seem to separate my target good enough for me where I go.

.....I prefer the 10" tornado for hunting small beaches, and a 14" WOT for big beaches with lots of ground to cover. I still use the Coinsearch on small trashy beaches, but you can't go near the water with it.
Good Luck.

fod:)

I guess I should have been more clear, and asked about waterproof coils instead. Specifically, the BBS All-Terrain 800, the Tornado, the SunRay S8 and any other mid-sized (approx. 8") coils. Perhaps you all can give me an opinion on those.

Thanks again,
OldeTymer

Since I got my GT with the 10 inch Tornado coil I seem to use this coil more than the coinsearch, but with the older 10 inch BBS coil that 8 inch coinsearch was much better depth for me. Now with the Tornado coil I seem to use this one more, but it is not as nice for a begginer to learn the Sovereign with I feel.
Did you ever try the S12 coil of SunRays as that is one great coil too and I dont have one right now, but that is a coil I would like to try against the 10 inch Tornado coil.

The 12 is great to cover ground and does not weigh any more than the others ( my 1st choice ). depth is probably a little better.
The 8 my wife likes and is a good choice ( especially for pinpointing )
BUT!!!!
The coinsearch I have coated with marine epoxy ( WATERPROOF ) and it is larger than the 8 but smaller than my 10 on the EXCAL. it floats in the surf so not good at depths but extremely effective in the wash and the floating action makes it glide ( I like that alot )the tones and pinpointing and depth are hands down better from the coinsearch. above an 8 in sunray is compared to the coinsearch, I have not used one but if it even comes close to the coinsearch it should be a good choice. If you are not going in the surf I would try to get my hands on a coinsearch and coat it with marine epoxy.
