Sovereign batteries question:

Tony N (Michigan)

Active member
Hi gang, long time no post.

I realize the Sov. needs 12 volts total to run.

So do you folks use non-rechargeable alkaline batteries or do you use the Minelab rechargeable packs? If so, how much are they?

Tony

I use the Minelab ni-cd in the 2a, and the Minelab Ni-mh pack in the GT.

I have a alkaline pack for each, and will carry it along with Duracells installed if I think the rechargeable pack may run out.

You can also get Sunray rechargeable packs (Ni-mh).

The price will depend on which pack for which model detector, and where you get it from.

I use the factory rechargeable pack in my Elite and the GT, but when I had my XS2 I used the SunRay rechargeble pack and used the factory nicad for a back up. On the GT I use the alkaline pack with 8 alkalines for a back up if my rechargeable goes dead while using it.

O.K. let's see if I understand:

If I got the GT it can use eight 1.2 volt NiMh batteries and not worry about it coming up to 12 volts?

But if I got the other Sov's I'd need eight 1.5 volt batteries?

NO...........

The alkaline pack that fits the Elite also fits the GT.

Both hold 8 batteries.

Both detectors need ALKALINE batteries or regular batteries when using this pack.

Rechargeables will not run long if at all. 8 ni-mh or ni-cd batteries only would supply enough power to just meet the minimum operating voltage of the detector. They would not have to run down much for the detector to quit.

Maybe was not clear when I said "Duracells" that I was talking about the good old "copper tops" you see advertized all the time.

Tony,

The GT comes with a rechargeable pack that is sealed and has 10 AAA cells in it to get its 12 volts. This is why they dont have a high Mha rateing. Now if you use a alkaline pack that holds 8 of the alkaline battery and use alkalines that supply 1.5 volts each you will have your 12 volt, but if you decide to buy 8 rechargeable nicads or nickel hydrides and put in this pack they only suppy 1.2 volts, so you have 9.6V and not enought to run the GT as you need 10 of these. You can buy a extra rechargeable back up Minelab pack for $65 retail for the GT as one does comes with it or being a alkaline pack dont come with the GT you can buy one for the Elite which is the same other than the color for $19.95 and put in 8 of the alkalines for a back up.

The GT comes with a rechargeable ni-mh 12 volt PACK. (and charger)

The factory packs contain 10 non-replaceable cells.

The Elite alkaline pack that you can use with it can only hold 8 cells.

The main thing is that we are on our toes trying to answer these questions and it is better to post the same answers then no one answers at all.
