Sovereign and Excal

Is the Excal really just a water proof Sovereign? I would like to hear from some who have hunted both especially in regard to depth.
Also can anyone give any feedback on the earlier models of the Sovereign vs now and opinions on what the best model was?

iv owned every model Sovereign made and every Excal model made.i do think the GT is the deeper of the Sovereign's...of the Excal's the last Excal ll i had was awsome and the best of the Excal's.if equipped with the same coil i found no diff in depth from the Excal ll and the Sovereign GT..my perfect set up would be a GT in a water proof box so i could change the coil's and head phones as needed..i now run a GT with a S12 coil and have found nothing to compare to it on the beach! i dont take it in the water for fear of dunking it and the S12 coil is a bit big for water hunting .my detector of choice for water hunting would be the Excal ll 1000,the new 10" coil is much lighter than the old model.you just cant go wrong with eather of these detectors! good luck!

Bling,I have the Excal II and GT.I've been researching the different coils for my GT. I've narrowed it down to the S 12 or WOT. I was wondering if you have ever compared the coils and if theres much difference between the two. I'd appreciate feed back from anyone who have used both of these coils..

I have a water proof Sovereign GT that I use in the surf, and it has a WOT coil, it is the only coil I use in the water. You can not beat the coverage it gives you, it is a hot coil and it goes very deep. I haven't used the S12, but the fact it gives 3 inches less coverage is a draw back in itself.

yes iv had 2 WOT's 15" and 3 S12's 12/1/2 " and find the WOT to be very nose heavy and hard to pinpoint under water.the WOT was no deeper than the S12 but does have about 2 1/2 " more coverage per sweep than the S12.the WOT weight is 32 oz and the S12 is 20 1/2 oz.and the stock GT coil is 23 oz.i also found with 3 diff Sovereign's with the WOT i could only run the sensitivity up to about 2 o'clock before they would become unstable..same detectors with the S12 i could run sensitivity up to 10 o'clock, keep in mind that on the GT 10 am is higher than 2 pm setting .same beach and conditions.but i did not notice any diff in depth from one to the other.about 15" on a clad dime is max for me.i think they both are fine coils but after my use of both of them i like the S12 better. good luck!

On pinpointing in the water I have no problem with my WOT. I locate the target and center it over the loudest tone, place my foot at the toe of the coil and start my scoop there pushing forward. I use the Beach Brute II which has a 8 1/2 wide bite, depending on on deep target is I can recover it quickly. On wet sand I am able to X the target N to S and E to W. I only use the WOT when I beach hunt, tried to switch back to the 10 inch coil, but after using the WOT for so long I could not get pass the "tiny" 10 inch coil..

The weight issue is not a problem either as I always use a harness on my detectors. it allows me to let go of the detector in the surf if needed and it hangs roight by my side out of the way.
