Sovereign Accessories Joe Patricks Patriot Meter

Buried Crap NJ

New member
I saw the above Sovereign sticky and no post for the Patriot Meter by Joe Patrick. While fewer than 100 were ever built and sold they were/are a great accessory to the Sovereign's ability to search out good targets while rejecting out trash. Costing a little less than double the cost of the 550 later the 180 they are still sought after by the discriminating hunter. Pictured here is a nearly new well cared for Patriot Meter which feature both the linear mode and block mode block being the same as a 180. Linear splitting the hairs a bit better! It also features an Iron Sentry and user friendly auto coil setting!

Jim new they were under three hundred the price would have come down if the sales went up. But remember that the Soverign was in the 600 dollar range and that leap was just too steep! You see them on Ebay from time to time in the last 5 years the last 6 of them sold between 250 to 400 and the price raise was consistent with the lenght of years between sales. Most show some signs of use! Now like the 550/180 meters they are getting scarce! This one is well loved, but may see the auction block some day.

Some pics and a little info of the Patriot meter is in the ID Chart/Meter Sticky with the rest of the meters listed. Second to last message here on page 2 of that sticky...

I tried 2 of these meter myself even though they were expensive and I like the back light they had for those nite hunting, but that is about it. They seem to be well made and a bit big and looked great, but I found the 180 digital meter had a faster response for those time when 2 targets were close to one another. Also the deeper targets for me didn't seem to read as good as the 180 meter did and feel that was because it was slower responding.Like I say I tried 2 different ones in case the first one had a small problem with it., Many did like it and I know some still use it too and swear by it, but for me and my hunting of old parks looking for the real deep one it just couldn't respond like the 180 digital meter would.
Now Joe Patrick make the Insite meter where it is installed right in the detector itself and is a 180 digital and see some real good feedback on it and want to do this to one of my Sovereigns someday, but have to send it to him do do the job and not got around to it.

That's exactly why I don't like analog meters. Takes too long for the needle to move so it's no where as fast as a digital read out on a detector. My 6000 Pro XLs (owned two) were fantastic machines, but without tone alerts I was forced to watch that needle all the time while working through heavy trash which really would bother my neck and didn't allow me to watch how I was using the coil as well for proper form. But the other thing I didn't like was waiting for the needle to move between targets which really hampers spotting mixed targets.

If that machine had tone alerts it would have almost been a perfect 10 in my book. I'd give it a 9 with tone alerts only because of the lack of larger coils to push it deeper. There is a tone mod for them and I hear guys really like that. If I could have only one analog machine it would be a 6000 Pro XL with the tone mod.

Other reason why I like digital numberical target IDs is it's far easier to see a precise # of a target to really split hairs on stuff when you want to do that.

Far as the Insight meter goes, now that I found out that external meters still will work with the Sovereign once it's installed (I always heard that they wouldn't) I wouldn't mind doing that myself now too. Nobody ever uses the built in speaker unless doing a video, but I figure I can rig up a splitter to plug in so I can hear through my headphones while also plugged into the camera so it too can hear the audio. I want to do that anyway because doing video with the built in speaker really gives the Sovereign a bad name, as that speaker makes it's audio sound terrible and nothing like what it does through headphones. I bet that turns a lot of people off to buying a Sovereign when they hear how bad, gritty, and flat it sounds on videos.

Only thing I don't care for about the Insight meter is that it's said not to ID with SEF coils, but I hear there is a possible fix for that. Now that I know you can still use external meters it'd be nice to have that built in meter just for the odd occassion of say chest mounting on a water hunt or something and just being curious as to what ID the target is reading. I bet a lot of land hunters who always chest or hip mount are using that meter because it seems the perfect setup that way for them.

Those Sovereign audio clips we hear on the forums are bad aren't they?? I too have notice that and I sure am glad they don't sound like that when we are detecting with our Headphones. Once a person get used to the tones it makes which is different than what we hear on the audio on these clips to me is sounds with headphones is like my Sovereign is singing to me and all I have to do is listen to that wonderful music until it gives me a note that is different then what I am used to hearing and dig up some interesting finds.
One thing we have to be careful with bragging up the Insite meter is Joe is not a sponsor of these forums that I know of, so if anyone ask about their web site or where to get them please PM the person asking where to get them and not post it on the forums or they can be deleted.

Rick, good point,I had to delete posts on my meters, because I'm not a banner sponsor. Please PM me with questions on my meters but no post.As a CZ5 user you are right the needle on the analog is much slower.I always liked the looks of Joe's meter, but expensive and a lot of bulk added.
