Is the Sov. GT a good detector for the beach and salt water , does it need to ground bal. every time i go from dry sand to wet salt sand ?

Your question would be better placed on the Sovereign/Excal/Elite forum. As I understand it the Sovereign GT has an automatic ground balance feature in the Track mode of operation. I have never had to ground balance going from wet to dry sand. With some coils I do have to change the sensitivity setting to keep the falsing to a minimum.

if you use it in discrimination mode you dont even need to ground balance it at all...... ground balance only required for all metal mode..... dry to wet ,wet to dry no problem...... if you work in the surf you may need to lower the sensetivity a little if it starts falsing..... the control box is not waterproof so extreme caution if working near water....

That is false information. The GT NEVER needs to be ground balanced in the all metal mode at the beach. I worked today for 4 hrs in salt water in all metal mode. The sovereign will self correct on its own regardless of sweep speed.

So another words is the sov. GT never has to be ground bal.in all metel or disc. on salt water beaches wet or dry and wet to dry and so on ? And how is the GT picking up gold rings on the beach? I have heard they are not good on gold? iS THIS TRUE ? Thank you all in advance.

im afraid to answer the question as someone who knows a little more than me will accuse me of giving you false information but amazingly the same people will read this post and not offer any help until they can read someone elses post and cotradict and criticize ....... ahh screw it ...here ya go... let me word this carefully.... i am by no means an expert or rocket scientist..... but i have owned a gt for about 4 or 5 years now..... i have a basic understanding of the owners manual but can not remember all the fine details....... in my opinion the gt is very good at finding gold ,especially rings.... however the gt along with many other detectors do have a hard time sounding off on most gold chains.... ive used mine at a saltwater beach probably 20 or 30 times...in that time i only found 1 gold ring ..it was in the wet sand about 5 inches down..... at a fresh water beach i found probably like 12 or so small pieces of gold such as stud earings charms hoop earings etc..... many of those signals were somewhat iffy but paid off.....for myself i have never mastered hunting in all metal mode..... i hunt in discrimination mode with the discr knob turned to the lowest setting ,volume about 3/4, sensetivity straight up 12 oclock, threshold barley audible.....other than slight adjustments to the sensetivity these settings work for me... as far as ground balancing i basically never do it because i dont like hunting in all metal.... as far as any ground balancing / all metal hunting tips please consult a rocket scientist or nuclear physicist..... peace out....

The GT has one disc mode and two all metal modes.
In disc mode and in the all metal pinpoint mode you do not have to ground balance.
In the all metal tracking/fixed mode you should ground balance for best performance.

Its one of the best beach machines made.

To follow-up a little more. Neil has it correct:
"The GT has one disc mode and two all metal modes.

Now with that said...There are different reasons to hunt in different modes!!!!

Different conditions require different modes.

The types of targets you are looking for may require different modes.

The GT is not ONLY a monster on a saltwater beach, but is a MONSTER off the beach as well. As long as Minelab will still repair this machine and mine is still working there is no need for me to own another machine.

Dave

Hope this helps.
