Sov GT Sensitivity

If there is a lot of nulling when hunting in DISC on the beach, but no target signal in ALL METAL, does this mean the SENSITIVITY is too high. I've noticed that an extra slow swing will reduce some nulls.
The ALL METAL threshold was still wavering a fair bit when switched from DISC......I guess I've answered my own question, just not 100% sure <img src="/metal/html/sad.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":sad">
Thanks,
Tony.

Yes, that's what it means. Either that or you're detecting over a '62 Caddy.
Sovereigns generally are able to run sensitivity at around the 11 O'Clock position without any falsing, maybe as high as 10 O'Clock. 12 O'Clock is a good starting point and may be your effective limit with a larger coil, like the S-12 for example. Depends on your beaches too. So where were you running it?
Also, when detecting the beach, if you're using a coil cover...be wary of salty sand build-up between the cover and the coil. It can make the machine go wacky on you.

And even change from day to day so what works one day may not another. Mike gives some excelent advice and should work on most beaches. Many do not use a coil cover on beaches because of the build up of sand but the sand can do a job on the bottom of your coil.

Adding a little to Mike's post.......
Keep your sweep speed fairly slow....you're not swinging an XLT.
Here's something to try. It's based on statements in Andy Sabisch's book, volume 1 pages 40 and 41.
Bury a coin, or stop on a fairly weak target. Adust sensitivity for the strongest response. You may have to lift the coil a little to determine exactly what setting is hottest.
If conditions permit using this setting then use it, otherwise back off as necessary for smooth operation.
I would expect a difference between wet and dry sand settings. Check it out and keep it in mind.
This also works in dirt.
I have found it to work out in MY dirt at about 11 O'clock with 4 of the 5 coils that I have used. Have no idea what values you will come up with.
The S-12 was the only one that behaved close to what you would normally expect out of other detectors when cranking up the sensitivity.
Need to point out here that even if conditions allow max setting without problems, you will LOSE depth by using settings higher than the peaked out "optimum" setting.
Have found that in very moist dirt the peak is maybe an hour higher and not as pronounced as it is in very dry dirt, however iron tends to hit more.
Very dry dirt can have a very "sharp" peak with very fast target deterioration when increased above optimum.
Give this a try and see what you come up with. The very best setting may very quite a bit between different areas of beach or dirt.

Was wondering about that all metal mode wavering threshold you mention.
If you have the treshold set just a little bit ( only a tweak)stronger will it smooth out. Is this a change in treshold over a specific area. Does tracking make a difference and are you actually not hearing any metal with the all metal mode. Maybe something very deep.
If getting a very smooth treshold with just a tweak of the control and then switching back to disc mode and having nulls then tweaking the senstivitiy control and having a stable sounding detector then it seems tha discm mode needs less senstivity in that area your working. sound like you may have answered your question already.
My gt on dry land will act differently at times in all metal mode and discrminate mode I try the different adjustments I mentioned trying to find out if I have a deep object on the fringes. I have detected a can once real deep so far in all metal mode while getting just a null signal( the treshold wavered out then back again) . I had the threshold set very slight and it just wavered on me but did not sound quite like a target signal. The disc mode signal was no signal either but a null that did not always null over the same spot from different angles. What had me digging only was because it was happening over one particular spot. ( at least from one angle at times)Trying like heck to learn this detector. So far it suprises me since I seem to be finding stuff that sounds like imagination signals.
And sometimes I find nothing I thing because I probably have a too high senstivity setting.

Thanks again guys,
The area I was searching was just past the high water mark...the sand was damp but more importantly (and which I should have mentioned before), the sand was a bit "salt and peppery", so there was signs of black sands which had been mashed around by hundreds of feet. Closer to the water, the sand is nice and white and evenly compacted and even though it was saturated, I could run the the same SENS setting with no nulls (or possible falsing).
Sometimes I could get the GT to null in the same spot, but if swept slower, and I mean really slow, then the null was gone.
Thanks heaps for the info,
Tony
