Sov GT for beach hunting

Lou

New member
I am looking at the Sov GT for beach hunting but heard that minelabs tend to break easily. I really like the sov's depth and iron mask feature but don't want to be sending to the shop too often. Is this really a concern with this detector?

Help!

Lou

I had a Sovereign Elite that I beach hunted with and now have an Excalibur, which is essentially a waterproof Sovereign. I've never had any problems. I know many who have not either. I think it boils down to two things.

1) A beach machine is subject to more wear and tear than any other.
2) Each individual has their personal level of "anal-ness" as to how well they take care of their machine.

If you maintain your machine properly it will normally provide many trouble-free years of service. With the non-waterproof machines, they are subject to a LOT of moisture intrusion. And if you drop it in the drink, YOU'RE DONE. I don't think there is any machine better suited for both beach hunting AND double-duty as a land machine than the Sovereign GT. But if beach hunting is what you intend this machine to be used for, I recommend you spend the extra duckies and get an Excalibur.

Minelabs are well built and perform well. Some people are rough handlers and do not realize that a fine tuned machine like Minelabs and most other detectors do not stand up well to being dropped or getting water inside of them. Electronics are delicate, get moisture in a non-waterproof case and there goes your money.

Hi Lou:
I have a Sov Elite and have been salt water beach hunting with it rain, or shine, for more than 3 years without having anything break. I did have a problem with condensation in my meter, but I live in the tropics where the temp and humidity are often 90/90. I air it out and it is fine. I bought spare washers and bolts and never had to use them. I have a Minelab hip mount bag and meter cover to protect the detector, and I rinse the coil and wipe the whole Elite down with fresh water after every hunt, to prevent corrosion and keep it clean.
I think you need to pick a detector that fits your personality and the way you hunt. If you're patient and methodical, you will probably love the Sov, and it will serve you well.

Good Luck and Good hunting.
fod:)
