sov gt any info on waterproofing this machine

Redbird,

Just do a search on "sovereign" and "waterproof" (all of these words) and there is penty of information on this.

Have fun,

Tony.

Also search the mods forum and this forum because I think I've seen waterproofed Sovereigns in those as well as the beach forum. It can be done cheaply if you use your imagination. There are two degrees to go to- either "waterproof" in the since that it shouldn't get wet if the box is dropped into the water by accident or hit by a big wave, or "waterproof" in that the unit can be sunk underwater for diving.

I probably wouldn't want to waterproof it for diving. I'd rather just make it splash/dropping proof by encasing it in a plastic box or something. Then either chest mounting it or floating it on a rubber inner tube or something for those calm water days. A lot of guys just throw a plastic bag around it and then use a twisty tie or rubberband to seal the bag's opening around the coil connector. In other words, you put the Sovereign into the bag face first. Then you just poke your headphone connector right through the bag into it's jack. That should protect it from most splash/wave action mounted on your chest or high on your hip.

I've also though about making a waterproof box that would have the thumb and index finger from a heavy latex glove (used for handling chemicals or cleaning) sealed and mounted to it's front. That way I could stick my thumb/index finger into the latex and be able to adjust any of the controls on the face plate. Much cheaper and more versatile solution than installing waterproof knobs or having to open the box to adjust things. My GT would be a bubble boy. :lmfao:

Since I've built a custom light weight shaft for my GT I plan to make the stock upper/lower shaft my "water machine". I don't trust the extra drag of the water for my light weight upper/lower shaft. It's very rigid, but why push my luck when I've got the stock shaft sitting around doing nothing. I'll drill a hole into the shaft just above the coil mount to drain water. I'll probably replace the stock grip with one of my ergonomics ones as they are much more comfortable, look better, and are rubber so won't hold water like the cheesy stock grip cover. Since I'll be hip or chest mounting the box I won't need my remote pinpoint switch that I use on my custom shaft. Might put some thought into it and build me a waterproof box that is just big enough to house the GT. That way it won't be bulky on my chest and I can worry less about tripping or something.

As a side note to people using other detectors water hunting: Be VERY careful. On some machines like Whites if you lay the machine down water can run up the shaft and find it's way into the control box. Even if you have a drain hole on the lower shaft don't trust it.
