Sov GT a little on the heavy side?

New member
I'm kind of interested in the Sov GT until I seen that it weighs 4.8 lbs I'm 60 years old and used to swinging a 2.2 lb. detector does one get used to all that weight?

If you get the hip-mount bag you will not mind it. I use the hip-mount bag for my Elite and the GT. I place the strap around my neck and to stop the bag from swinging forward while bending over I use an old camera strap that goes around my back to each side of the hip-mount bag. Hey I'm 67 and don't mind the weight by using the hip-mount around the neck. John

I have a "Swingy-Thing" from Doc's Place
Works good. :detecting::minelab:

i used to hip mount with my sovereign which takes all the weight off the arm:clapping: but i found using it that way the coil cable at some piont becomes loose/unstable because of all the pulling on the cable when your swinging the coil from left & right. normally the cable is fixed still with no movment.
you can resolder the cable if it comes slack a the plug end but your buggered if it happens at the coil head end as there normally sealed with reson or some thing like that.

I use an oversized fanny pack from Beltoutlet.com (the cheapest price for the best quality) on a padded 3" DeWalts work belt and I also carry my digging knife and finds pouch on the belt too. With the S-8 (8" coil) from Sun Ray, my setup is less than 2 pounds. I believe the lightest Tesoros are 2.2 lbs, If I am not mistaken. I think the GT is the best all-around detector for coin shooting and beach hunting (my favorite). Oh, and about the cable problems: I have been hip-mounting the Sovereigns (all of them) for 7 years and have never had a problem because I secure the cable to the work belt so there is no strain on the connector. Just tape a tie wrap (formed into a loop) to the cable and drill a hole thru the leather belt and install a "snap hook" and clip the "loop" into it. Then, if you drop your rod, the strain is all on the snap hook, not the connector. I also use a cable tie to keep the cable still at the coil end. One last thing, I carry the fanny pack in the middle of my back and never notice the weight. In my pouch I have cardboard tubes for pennies, larger coins, jewelry, trash & my water bottle. In the other compartments of my fanny pack I carry reading glasses, a magnifying glass, gum, sun glasses and my gloves. There is also room for a spare battery too. When I hit the beach I am ready for a nice long hunt.

I used the directions to create a hip mount bag for my Elite, it works great.

Good luck!
