If it's a completely stock unit, then it is supposed to always have a threshold.

If it has been modified for silent search, then it will have a threshold in all metal and no threshold in disc mode when adjusted right.

If it is a stock Elite you set the threshold in all metal pinpoint to a slight hum, now switch to disc and the hum should still be there. When you start swinging the coil over the ground this threshold will change or null of iron or a disc target. When it seems to be a solid null you are swinging the coil too fast and have to slow down, or there is too much iron and you may have to go real slow.
Many ask about the threshold nulling, but this is nornal when you are detecting as it is seeing iron or a disc out target.
