Sov Elite: Detech 4.5

Hi there,i've recently bought the joey coil and it's now on my sovereign permanently. This coil is far less prone to interference, both electrical and ground interference allowing the machine to be run at higher sensitivity settings while maintaining smooth operation.I've also found the coil to be very sensitive and have surprising depth. The machine certainly does'nt null as much in the trash which is why i had the coil in the first place.....i'm now searching trashy areas with more confidence.Another benefit is the weight....it's so light i can swing the sovereign all day without getting a bad back which i could not do with the 10" coil. For me personally, this is one of the best things i have bought in a long time....i'm surprised there is not more information on this coil....perhaps everybody who owns one wants to keep it's performance a secret to give them an edge:laugh:.Seriously though for the fields i hunt it's definately an improvement over the standard coil and it's improved my finds rate.Regards,Neil.

I've heard this....that round coils are more prone to electrical noise than "egg" shaped or "butterfly" styles. I've found the little S-5 coil, even though it's perfectly round, to pick up way less interference and so actually get more depth than the 10" in auto or even highest stabile manual setting for an area. I believe it's due to the smaller coil picking up less noise. In my garage it's air testing deeper than the 10" due to the electrical noise with highest stable manual or auto setting. You have the best of both worlds going for you with that coil. It's smaller and doesn't have a round shape, so it might be even better than say the 8" coil or another of similar size at eliminating nearby noise.

Keep us informed on how that coil is working for you. Another benefit people say coils of that shape have is a thinner detection line from tip to toe of the coil, allowing them to seperate targets better than a round coil of similar dimensions.

Hi CH,the joey is certainly working at seperating targets better.I bought the coil for the purpose of searching the really trashy areas of my fields and so far it's finding targets that the standard coil has missed. It is also getting as much depth as the 10" coil due to the fact i can turn up the sensitivity further than i can the 10" in a given area.I'm sure if you used both coils at the same sensitivity the 10" would be slightly deeper but in most areas interference means that you can not use as high a sensitivity as you can with the joey so in most areas the joey is as deep or deeper.(where i hunt anyway)
Another benefit i forgot to mention in my earlier post is the ease of pinpointing.....it's really accurate at pinpointing a target with the x method.I will keep you updated on how it performs at different sites and after i've used it for a little longer so i can build up a more accurate picture over a period of time.But.....so far,so good.

Thanks for the response so far guys, I had no doubt that using the Joey would be a big improvement, just need to choose between that and the Detech 4.5"x7" which is even smaller, perhaps to small! To answer Critterhunter's question, I have seen the Detech for the Sovereign on sale in the U.K.

That's interesting. Around here the only odd sized SEF coils for the Sovereign that I know of are the 10x12, 12x15, and one bigger one that's not really meant for coin/ring sized targets. I noticed they have a coil for other machines like the Explorer that is a 10x14...I think that's the perfect compromise between the 10x12 and 12x15 that I'd want to still keep sensitivity to coins/rings as I feel the 12x15 might be a little too big. Wish they'd come out with that.

There is also an 8x6 Sef coil available for the explorer, etrac etc. maybe they will make one for the Sovereign shortly as its been a big success on the explorer/etrac in UK amongst roman iron. I am not finding any loss of sensitivity to smaller targets on the bigger SEF coils, I'm trying out an 18x15 on the etrac(for coin hunting) at the moment and i will report when i've used it a few times, only been out once so far with it so its early days.

Phoned up the shop today to get verification that the Detech coil was for the Sovereign, turns out it was the last one they had and was no longer being made, so I had to grab it. The Joey is more easily available so if need be I can buy it at a later date. Anyway I will keep you posted as to how it performs. Link below is to the shop.

Kared, think I remember you saying that....that you found the 12x15 was very sensitive to even smaller coins and got some really good depth. You're the reason why I haven't ruled out the 12x15 yet. Thanks...:ranting:

Hi CH,if you go into joan allen metal detectors website and click onto accessories you will find the sef coils. There are field tests on all of these coils giving the merits and downsides of each.Seems to me the conclusions drawn are that the smaller coils are more sensitive to the smaller coins.Take a look......if you have'nt seen it already.Regards,Neil.

Yea, I've read those reviews before. But the 12x15 getting less depth on a coin than the 10x12 is because that was on a quarter penny which is pretty tiny, like maybe smaller than a half dime. I'd expect that, but it may in fact do better on regular dime/penny sized targets maybe.

Going back to the tests on joan allen, the 15x12 had caught up depthwise on a 5 pence....about the same size as a dime.Any target larger than this will probably be picked up slightly deeper with the 15x12.I think with the coins you are searching for,and as long as the ground you are searching is fairly clean, the 15x12 may be a better option. The only downside is the extra weight.

Sound theory and good point! If it wasn't for all the above latest messages I might have just bought a used 10x12 in a PM that somebody offered at a decent price. Now I'm going to go back to the "Coil Stats & Opinions" thread (or whatever it was called) several weeks back and look over the weights I listed for the various coils. That's about the only thing that can draw me back to the 10x12 now, because I'm starting to think the 12x15 is going to be the same depth on pennies/dimes and probably deeper on larger coins.

I don't care about how heavy it is since I plan to just use it for special deep target sites. Only advantage about say the S-12 or maybe the 10x12 in size and weight would be I might be able to get away with making them my every day coil instead of the 10", since I think they are both lighter. I've read of several guys who started with a stock 8" coil on a Sovereign and opted to go to the S-12 instead of the 10". If you think about it, that makes perfect sense since it's lighter than the 10 and you'd probably see more difference going from an 8 to a 12 than you would from an 8 to a 10. For the same logic it might be better to go from my 10" to the 12x15 instead of sort'a duplicating the 10 with the 10x12.
