I have used the Explorer mow for 6 months in mostly factory presets. After reading this forum I decided to change the sensitivity to manual and raise it until it became unstable which turned out to be 26. I also moved to Audio 1 under advanced options. I dropped the threshold two notches to a lower level to reduce noise level in the head phones. I was surprized to discover that the machine in these settings acts almost like a silent search mode. I thought I should hear a constant hum with changes in pitch but instead it was dead silent. I dug several deep targets in a hunted out spot so the machine was reading targets properly. Is the silent background correct or am I missing something?

Depends on your earphones settings and of course your hearing. Many with good earphones really come up with a fine tune on the threshold.
Always felt experimenting with setting over normal such as audio 1,2,3 for those with excellent hearing may work well..Norm works for me so why fix what aint broke. I tend to keep things simple but Explorer has many changeable facets. I would find a good useable program for your area and stick with it as it can become a tweakers nightmare...Remember right out of the box in Quickstart its a formidable unit so take this into consideration lest one overtweaks and spends his time tweaking instead of detecting..
