Here's one for those technical experts. There are several options for setting the sounds... normal, long, ect. If im right, all those sounds must go thru the AC side of the coil to be processed. Even in AM in order for the sounds and tones to be seperated they must be processed. The DFX is a pretty good copy of the Explorer in that it does many of the same things just in different ways. The DFX has a method in which you are in true AM with but a single sound working off the DC side of the coil . This sound isnt processed per sa but is the same as pinpoint and with increased depth. My question is if you use the CONST sounds and AM are you using the DC side of the coil only much like pinpoint which increases depth? Just like pinpointing the machine makes a sound based on any metal it passes over and doesnt have to process it. There just isnt enough information out there on how the machine operates compared to some of the Whites... thanks to Jeff Foster for that.
 
I am not an expert but my assumption is the Explorer doesn't have a "DC" mode similiar to the single frequency detectors. I think this amounts to non-motion all metal mode, like a pinpoint mode or other threshold type modes in which can be an auto-tune, VCO or not or just a static mode in which the operator has to reset the threshold manually.
From a non-technical standpoint, I don't see any advantage in using the single tone mode on the Explorer verses using the multi-tones(my opinion). Now this is just my opinion too but to use an all-metal(static, such as single frq. detectors have) mode one has to have in mind using it where there are very few signals in the ground, then going back to disc mode to double check the signal to see how it responds.
The same method can be used with the Explorer by using multitones with threshold, carefully listening to see if the threshold is lost, this can be done with a clear screen or a small amount of iron mask and then determine if the signal is ferrous or not.
Then if one is brave at heart he can dig those really deep signals, whether they are ferrous or not, that are barely detectable to see what turns up.

Are you saying the Explorer coils arent induced? Outside being AC and inside being DC. I thougth thats why you get more depth in pinpoint. I have noticed i can get a number when pinpointing with the Explorer which sometimes is more accurate on deep targets. The DFX isnt a single freq machine and does have AC and DC operation. You are right that it may be too time consumeing to be a valuable tool. I was just looking at getting a better ID on deeper targets. I guess locating targets that bounce from iron to the cond side then sizeing them might be the best approach. Just looking for that approach to finding deeper targets. Im hopeing Andy's new book will be a little more insightful as to the techniqal operations or the Explorer.
 
If you are looking for more depth, there are larger coils for the Explorer. Now they will definitely go deeper on larger items and if the ground conditions are favorable, you might get better depth on coin sized objects.
If raw depth is what you need then going to a PI might be the way to go.
 
I can't answer that but I can say that I've found deep items the will detect in disc mode and not make a peep in pinpoint. I don't hunt in const sounds.
 
Like most people im not really looking for more depth as i am interested IDing those deeper items. There is no doubt that the Explorer ID is very good... especially with silver. Everyone worth their salt is looking for that edge to finding targets beyond 8" that others have walked over. I was just wondering if anyone had tried the Const on their test garden. Ive also found items that i missed pinpointing or at least had a hard time pinpointing. Most of the time there was a target closer to the ground that made it difficult to properly pinpoint until i removed some of the top soil. Thanks Steve i appreciate your comments and enjoy your posts. Its good to get advice from some of the people who routinely have some good finds. Im just one of those who like to know how things works.
 
You are right we all want to squeeze out a little extra depth.
I thought about getting the Pro coil or the 10 X 12 SEF for that reason but I am unsure whether they would get any more depth in my ground.
You could experiment by using audio 1 with high gain and high sensitivity to see if will help you hear those signals right on the fringe of the ID system.

I can get about 24 on the sensitivity here... occasionally 28 if i use a little disc to cut out EMI and mineral noise. Ive played with audio 1 but it sure takes some getting used to. Uping the gain to 9 has surpriseingly helped in some areas. Ive not noticed to much distortion from it. Larger coils are great, but there becomes a trade off at some point on those smaller items. Ive even played with threshold tones and have found setting it at 5 brings in the pennies and 9 i get less pennies more nickels and dimes. Its all about the hearing im sure.
