I am on my second day with the XS....and was quite frustrated! I have only found a few pennies after hours of searching some old stomping grounds. I have however noticed quite a few extremely deep signals, that I have dig really far down for. I came home and re-read some of the questions on hear, noticed (cladmaster) had info of why coins dissappear after disturbing the soil!! My question...When I get an X-1 probe, will I then be able to hear the sound of the coin better after digging and it vanishes?

When you dig down so far, you break the halo which in turn makes the target disappear. The X-1 finds those and quick! You would probably $#!t if you knew how many coins have been left by people without an X-1. I know I sure did! After I got my probe last year I went back to places I had hunted and pulled coins out of my own plugs I had gave up on before I got it.
IMO, the probe is the first must have item that any new user should get. Much more important than a smaller coil!!! I about guarantee that 75% of the people that bought an Explorer and gave up on it and sold it would have kept it had they bought an X-1 when they got it! Oh well, more coins for us! <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

Hey Ric,I dug up an 1898 (no mintmark - dang) yesterday. Iffy signal, dug down and probed. lost the signal, swept the coil in pinpoint to make sure I heard it, then dug out more dirt and then got the weak hi-pitched tone. Kept using the probe and out it pops. At first I thought it was a "play money" coin. I retrieved it and saw the wreath on the back hoping for a seated. The dime was very thin. The probe is worth the bucks and can't see going without it. If they improve it any at all, I will have one. Until then, it is a must have!!! I too would like to back to all those old holes and re-dig those lost signals. wmike
