which detectors regardless of brand detect by sound alone?i'm sick of these detectors that tell lies with a screen, emubob

Tesoro, has quite a line up. But, you could cover up your screen, and try listening to your present machine first.

The Deus Lite is a deadly tone orientated machines

Minelab Sovereign Series. Of course they are no longer made as everyone (almost) wants a detector to do everything but dig the target.

They all do............ who says you have to look at a display or even believe it if you do sneak a peek? A display is only a tool to help you if you want a second opinion on what you hear.

I have "beep and dig" detectors only because that is the way I learned to metal detect. I've always wanted to try a display unit but never have because I'm comfortable with just sound and also a bit frugal. If you are a detectorist that likes to dig "iffy" type signals then you can be fooled by sound, visual or a combination of both at times in my opinion. Helps in keeping that old saying true..."no place is ever hunted out". Ha! Maybe one day some alien will accidently leave behind a metal detector here on Earth so we can reverse engineer it:nerd:

what do you mean by tell lies. i use the t-2 and with each screen category there are several targets that correspond to each one. some are good and most are trash. i usually use one tone but if i used 3 tones the screen i.d would be the same as the tone i.d. i believe you will find that to be the same with any detector that has visual and tone i.d.

It's called Duck Tape. You know it isn't a law that you have to look at the display at all, it's an OPTION. That means you can choose to use it or not.
Weird huh?

Oh, and I've found the sound isn't all that trustworthy either. Like the display, you have to learn to use it right before it can be trusted?

They all lie somewhat, you just need to be a better judge of character as to the story your machine is telling you... a multi tone machine would be best if you are relying on sound alone , at least that way the lies will have a bit of a musical tone to them... ive always found it best to learn my machines language at places i was guaranteed to find coins at least that way i would have a baseline to work from....

I use both, but learned on beep and dig machines. I find the tid models to be helpful on coins, but do just as well or better by thumbing the discrimination on the beep and dig machines, just takes a little longer but you don't get fooled by a questionable display.

Most of my machines have screens but as a general rule i mainly use them as a audio machine as this is more reliable, screens are usually only reliable of a fashion upto say 8'' but audio will go much deeper, this is why if you do deep work and you are trying to hear those feint target then a decent set of headphones.

After buying the detector in my mind the headphones are the most important piece of kit that you use while detecting.

Take a nail and wave it in front of the coil and you'll get a ID number telling you that it's a nail. Take a silver dime and wave it in front of a coil and you'll get a ID number telling you that it's a dime. Now dig a hole about 4 inches deep and throw the dime and nail into the same hole and cover it up. Now using the same detector, run the coil over the covered hole and you'll get a ID number telling you that it's trash. That's why when the going gets rough, I grab one of my Tesoro detectors. In heavy trashy areas that mostly can slaw and pull tabs, you can set the discrimination up just high enough to discriminate out those problem pull tabs and still be able to easily find coins. When detecting areas that the main problem is nails, just set the discrimination up just high enough to discriminate out nails and start digging all good sounding audio tones.

Right now, Tesoro's best detector for working around sites that are loaded with nails is the Outlaw.

Now that would be the perfect detector George ........... a self digger !!! Maybe one with wheels so you didn't have to swing it too..
send it out............ with remote control ...........bring it back in with all the goodies... :)

A few rigs have been mentioned regarding 'hunting by tone' ..My F70 has the screen, but I rarely look at it except to check settings or batt life...it has a variety of 'tone' settings..you can even select nickels to ping in a high tone like a dime if you wish, but my favorite and exclusive tone I hunt in is 'Delta Pitch'...

Delta Pitch assigns a different tone for all targets from 1-99 on the screen...so you can tell a half from a Q, a dime from a penny, a zinc, a tab a nickel, foil, iron, even a canadian penny stops your heart because it has a crisp higher ping than a normal US one......everything on down the line just by the tone...you need good headphones and the diligence to learn and digest what all these tones mean...the F70 also has 'modulated audio' within the tones, so you know from the very first ping what the item is and how deep it is without looking at the screen and dinking around with your eyes to decide what it might be..you can go entire days, weeks without ever digging a bottlecap or tab or any junk if you wish, just coins or 'known tones'

The screen 'TIDS" are helpful in associating the tone with the target, but after a little while, you will just go on tones alone...I find it confusing to my CPU between my ears to switch back and forth between my ears and my eyes...I trust my ears a lot more...check out the Deus posts on hunting multitone, and of course the Minelab guys do too...also check out the 'Delta Pitch' tone selection feature on the F70...
