Sorry Omega, I have learned my lesson.

Well, there I was in a detector shop looking at units as an upgrade from my detector. I was looking at spending 600.00 if need be and I asked the dealer " any used detectors?" He said just a few. A compadre, minelab and oh, a omega. I said I bought an omega once and sold it the next day and kept my AT Pro. It was too unstable I said. As I looked around at all the other detectors I found myself glaring at the omega. Finally I said lets turn it on and do a little air testing. To my surprise it was pretty stable in his shop. I couldn't resist I bought the omega and took it home. I have always liked the design and feel of the omega but heard all the negatives about it. I should have given my first one an opportunity to prove it's self. Long story short I have been testing it in my yard here in N GA. I have the sens up to 97 in the red clay and it's very stable. Since this unit is new to me any advise on settings or other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Can you hold down the pinpoint button while turning the machine on and look at what firmware number it shows? Are you using the stock concentric coil or the double d coil?

The latest version for the Omega is version 6. First Texas will upgrade the detector if sent in. If just sent in for that a fee may apply.

TALKED TO FIRST TEXAS..THEY SAID THE VERSION 6 OMEGA HAS A FILTER ADDED FOR 15 KHZ EMI..INTERNAL SERIAL NUMBER.. AND RESPONDS BETTER TO BIG SILVER OBJECTS..(MINE ALSO HAS A DIFFERENT TONE SETUP)..JUST THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE THE INFO..

What kind of changes they made between the new Versions?

the new version 6 has a filter for 15 khz emi..different tone setup, embedded serial number, and responds better to big silver...this is per first texas...i have the newest version....my brother bought one at the same time and his is version 4.he sent his in for upgrade as soon as he got it..

can you describe the different tone setup?

Undrpar--------Does that new version 6 handle the EMI problem really well now?------Is it a lot better with EMI than the older version Omegas?

I never had the older version..to tell the truth I would never of known the differences if my brothers wasn't version 4..out of the 5 places I've used it..i could get 99 sens. at one school and an old home..the other 3 places I could not get above 60..but I did a test ...i buried a clad dime 7 inches and using the nel sharpshooter I could get a repeatable signal at 55 sens.my brothers with the 10 inch stock concentric could not..he could get it at 60 sens..that's pretty good at at a lower sens..

I have owned 3 Omegas, all were a Revision 4. Most of the time I could hunt at a '99' Sensitivity setting, in many urban environments in a big city (Portland, Oregon metro area), but there were also times when it had to be reduced to ±'70' or lower, frequently to the lower '50s' or upper '40s.' So far I have heard from a couple of people who got the latest version. One didn't notice any change in the Tone ID, and both indicated they still had more EMI issues than they expected. More than their competitive detectors have, or even that their other brand/model units have no EMI issues at all, even at maximum Sensitivity.

Different search coils, alone, can result is some subtle differences in depth or target response. Were both of the Omega's using the same Discrimination setting, and both GB'ed over the very same spot? Were they both swept over the clad dime at the same competitive sweep speed?

There can still be subtle differences in similar models even out of the same production run, but if they were still close that was good.

the version 5 and 6 have different tone setup than version 4 and prior..my brothers just came back today after getting upgraded from version 4 to 5.. 2 tone disc has a high tone now for high conductors.the only update to my version 6 is the embedded serial number like the new f75 ltd2..i agree different coils will alter the outcome..it was more or less to see if we could get good depth at lower sensitivity if need be..i'm happy with the results..if you do a side by side version 4 vs 5 or 6 in 2 tone disc its night and day difference in tones..

Jason, I'll look forward to checking out a newer version Omega because the 2-Tone audio was my preferred search mode tone for most hunting I do other than urban "flash money" sites. For those I opted for the 4-Tone ID audio. I'll do a side-by-side comparison for sure because I have to like the audio for all-around performance.

Now, if they could just get their detectors to work better in a dense iron nail environment the Omega would see much more use. I prefer the round 8" Concentric and sub-5" Double-D coils on the Omega, and for most hunting locations it works well. Just not in the dense iron nails.

You asked for tips so my tip is disc out small nails and run in 2 tones so you can hunt the trash better..They work darn good in trash,i have a sharp shooter coil but use my 10" elliptical more, deeper and seems to work the trash just as good as the DD coil.unless cherry pick'in don't bother with notching as u will miss good targets because of masking..If times short and your testing a site thats where the notch feature comes in handy, just to sample the ground for older silver..s.t

Yea also the gamma has turned into my go to machine..and i have some machines to pick from..s.t
