Last night I was caught in MD Limbo: I wanted to detect a little but I was too tired and lazy to drive somewhere after a 14 hour day. So, as I shuffled past my wife with all of my gear I went.... out in my own back yard.

I haven't used my 705 in many moons since we relocated from AK to TX, but its coming back to me (after another re-read of Digger's book, I might add). The tally: 40 cents in nickels and dimes, five or six rotted zincs, a beautiful jasper chip (?) from one of the holes, a mail key and a house key buried about 6 inches, and a silver ring that actually fits me.

Of course there was evidence of prior resident's weekends in the backyard (caps and pull tabs), but I was surprised at how deep I hit one of the nickels; it was a quieter tone and a little mixed, but I figured if it was a deep coin that'd be what it sounded like. The hole was as deep as my Lesche is long (GB about 38 so mild(er) soil).

What a hoot for a little time spent in a 25' x 25' area of the back yard, but there's lots more to detect. Attached is a picture of the ring - it hit about 46 TID, sound about right? I ask because there is no 925 stamped inside, so thought it might be made of something "more durable...".

Congrats on your yard finds !!! The ring definitely has the look of silver !! Don't know what part of Texas you moved to but Welcome to the Lone Star State !!! I love the mild soil here in my part of Texas. Almost any machine will perform well in our soil even fixed GB machines. I long for the History that many of the other States have but good finds are still possible if you hit the right spots. Good luck and hope you get to venture out of your yard but just remember that State Parks in Texas are off limits. Not sure if that was the case in AK.

Thanks pescadore. I didn't know about the State Parks, but now I do! Alaska is pretty wide open as far as detecting is concerned except for the propspecting. You really have to do your homework about where you want to go to make sure you aren't in someone's claim. I'm not sure what's allowed in my city, but I've always tried to keep it low key and make sure that no one could tell I was ever there. I've been doing a lot of research and about ready to ask for my first permission,so I'll let you know how it works out.
