My wife works in a lab. A bunch of senior students did a project on mandarins recently to see what (if any?) substances are found in the peelings. They did a comparison study between mandarins from China and mandarins from Japan. First the good news
.....mandarins from Japan were clean....in fact no toxins were found at all. Now, the mandarins from China, not so good news. They were contaminated with an endless amount of substances. Why may you ask?
Well, some further research found that the areas where most of the mandarins are grown are along the largest river in China, the "Yangtze River". What is done however, is that the mandarins are picked and thrown in the Yangtze River, and they just float downstream for many many miles, until they arrive at the delta, where they are picked out and packaged. Now China has some of the most polluted rivers in the world, and Yangtze River just happens to be one of them. Just think of all the raw sewage (toilets) and industrial (heavy metals) wastes that get into this river and manage to get into the peelings and possibly the fruit itself.
My wife set a new rule in our house..... "NO FOOD FROM CHINA IS ALLOWED IN OUR HOME"
