The other day I was driving thru Podunk and noticed the old gas station right downtown had been torn down and no frost in the fresh dirt. So I called up the owner and get the go ahead. Weather warmed up to 39 degrees and off I go to hit the tear out. Hunted about 3 hrs today which was nice since I haven't been out in 2 months and I was digging everything including zincs....just to be digging. Didn't find anything worthwhile except for a couple wheats and a piece of silver jewelry but it was nice to get out. I'm about ready to head home and this guy comes acrossed the main drag with camera in hand and starts asking questions, etc. Turns out he came from our funky little local newspaper which is right acrossed the street and wants to do a little write-up? Well all I got is like 2 wheats, 8-10 zinkers, the silver jewelry, a key, and 2 clad dimes and really don't want him to take pics of the crap so I ask him if maybe I could come back next week with some of my better finds from our town....he says that's be great! So he takes some pics of the crap and will wait until next week for some better coins. No real big deal as I always run an ad every spring for a few months to thank the county residents who have allowed me onto their properties to hunt and also mention that I'm always looking for privates, etc. with my contact info, etc. etc. Half the time when I do a doorknock they'll say "are you the guy with the ad in the paper?" So anyways..... hopefully they'll do a little write-up with pics of a couple better coins, give me more "exposure" and I'll make sure I can drop my contact info in the write up ta boot.....!!!!! I also got permission from the photographer to hunt his place which has some history. No special finds but it was nice to get out and maybe I can land a few more privates outta the deal....??????

Now that I think about it that's not a half bad idea! In fact,it's not bad at all! The idea of getting noticed and your name known before you even tentatively show up at the door is a great one. It just takes one or two good "ins" and it may just take off like a jet! I am going to consider that this spring, that's just a completely different angle I hadn't thought of,and I've done a lot of thinking! Thanks for posting.....:clapping:

Thanks for posting the story !
Sounds like the exposure could really open up some sites for you to hunt in the future - maybe some of us could also use this type of approach.

Good Luck ! :detecting:

Well it sure can't hurt....???? But to be honest the ad I run every spring really hasn't been very productive as far as call backs but I have had a couple of calls. The ads are costly but I'm not in it for any monetary reward other than to hopefully pop a few older coins? I feel it's a nice jesture to thank some folks once again for allowing me onto their ground and it keeps my name out there....... In all reality you'll get more private action with the much hated door knocking imo.........
