Something interesting in regards to a bear attack..................

I have spent the past hour doing a Google search on bear attacks and found out something very interesting. We have been told many times that if a bear attacks you, that it is best to play dead. This is not entirely true, it depends on what type of bear attacks you.

If a black bear attacks you, playing dead will not help you because they attack with the intent to kill because they eat their victims on the spot. A grizzly bear will attack because you have pissed them off for some reason or they consider you a threat. A grizzly bear attack is the only bear attack that playing dead may save your life. A grizzly bear likes meat a day or two old, and at worst may drag you to a place where it will hide your body for a future meal.

If you are bored, go to Google search and type in "Bear Attacks." I also read a few articles on mountain lion attacks. This was a very interesting subject to read about. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

but unless they are starving, Grizzlies rarely consume human flesh and are more often just content to put you out of their picture and will leave if you appear to be dead or submissive. On the rare occasion that a Black bear attacks a human, it is usually with the intent to kill and eat. Blacks are more easily discouraged by a humans aggressive behavior and being beat on.
Thus the old hunters adage....."always fight a Black bear and never fight a Grizzly".

If one considers the number of hours humans spend in bear habitats, millions daily! Bear attacks are extremely rare.
The odds of being attacked by a bear are much greater than being struck by lightning, and for every bear you may see, there were likely dozens that saw, smelled, or heard you and ran off.

In the early 1970's i was present as a professional hunter and observer on a Blackbear study that took place in the early spring and involved removing the cubs from dens to be weighed, measured and blood tested.
The biologists and helpers, (myself and two others with weapons) would disturb the sow bear with noise and sometimes long poles to make her leave the den. Then the biologist would crawl in and remove the cubs for testing. They would squall and whimper, but being so small, were no problem.
While this procedure was going on, the female bear would be hanging around, huffing and whuffing and generally trying to act tough. On the three occasions that i was along the sow never attacked and though we were vigilant, it was not necessary to do more than fire a warning shot. The gov't changed this "contract" policy to include only their own people, wildlife officers etc shortly after i was involved, it was kind of interesting and enlightening at the time but kinda scary at first. I believe that with several people on the scene the bear was afraid to get real aggressive.
One would never EVER do this with a Grizzly, no matter how many people were there! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZNxdm799YYCA' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/16/16_3_161.gif' alt='Bear' border=0></a>

into a black bear or grizzly bear in the wild because I would not stand a chance if attack but I have always thought that the grizzly bear was a beautiful bear. I have some pictures in my home of these great bears that I would like to share with you. These pictures were painted by my dear friend Vernon Cross from the Friends and Finds Forum who led me to these forums 5 years ago after I read a story of his in Western & Eastern Treasures Magazine. Vernon spent the better part of 30 years in Alaska painting Alaskan Wildlife and nature and it's situations as he saw it and lived it, Vernon is a Artist, a writer, a hunter, a fishermen and a good father and family man. I have 5 of Vernons paintings hanging in my home and plan on picking up a few more once my drywall is done, here are three of them all of the Grizzly Bear, Vernon writes a little caption before each painting.

"Grizzly"

The Alaska brown bear (or grizzly), is an awesome sight to behold.

Bears in the wild are not all that bad. I have run into a few in my days, and even more lately, but I have never had an occasion to be overly concerned about them. I just leave them a pretty good berth and we have this understanding..... I won't bug you, you don't kill me" :) :) :)

all the best

I remember Vernon from the old White's Forum when I first started out on the computer. Vernon was sorta the leader of the Forum, well liked by most everyone. He displayed a sense of humor in many of his posted messages. I remember Falk, Elson, Charlie, BJ and many others...any of which that I would be proud to ride fence with any day of the week.

Yes, Vernon has great talent...these bear pictures prove that! I especially like the last picture, the one with the charging bear on Last Chance Creek. I am of the opinion that the bear in this picture is not bluffing, he means business.

In the past, Remington firearms have had bears in some of their rifle ads, great pictures that I have always enjoyed too!

Ray, thank you so much for sharing these pictures, I love them. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

When you said that you think the mama bear did not protest too much because of all the people, I think that I would have still played it safe and stayed at the back of the group. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas) :)

i too have seen some of his paintings, they are wonderful, thank you so much!
