Something I did not know about the 1270

I was doing some air testing just to get an idea how much depth is lost with the silencer switch on. So not really testing any one coil I just went with what was on the stick, which was a little 3.75” coil and being I just wanted a snap shot I left my settings as they were from the last hunt. Normal disc 8, sensitivity 8 and I thought only one target a silver dime. So I setup and run the dime past the coil and got 7.5” from the coil with the silencer off. Then the same with the silencer on and I got 5”, wow a 2.5” loss.

Then just for kicks I turned the silencer off and run the disc down to 1 and ran the dime past the coil and again got 7.5”. Then I turned the silencer on and got 6.5” from the coil. Now I only have a 1” loss, which was a surprise to me.

Now I know that the disc setting affects the detector with the silencer on. I wonder what it does in the iron disc mode? So I switched to iron disc silencer off and got 7.5” again and then with the silencer on I got 7”, only ½ loss.
Well again another surprise to me.

So just follow through, I did the same with all my coils and recorded the information at the bottom of my chart.
Just thought somebody else out there may not know this and it does give me something to think about.

You were right on with your statement, leave the silencer off. I did some more testing on reading several silver half dollars in a small box and with the silencer on the 1270 would not respond, but with the silencer off it would respond. Now it would hit a single half with the silencer on. I am not going to say this is a bad thing, just something that you should know before just turning on the silencer and looking for a small cache of coins your not going to find them. Keep in mind I was testing in the normal disc, I didn't think to try iron disc or all metal.

The silencer is a tool but right now I can't think of any need for it.

Some of you may have seen my post about finding a silver half dollar with my F75 a couple of weeks ago. Well I went back to the same spot with the 1270 with a little 3 3/4" coil and I was running in iron disc set and max and normal disc set just above tabs.

I found that half on a steep bank and I could still see the spot I dug the half about 3/4 of the way up the bank. I thought I start with the 1270 at the bottom and work up to that half dollar hole. Keep in mind that both me and my brother him with an F5 with a 11" coil and me with the F75 with the little 6" elliptical coil and we pounded that bank the day I got the half. So back to the 1270 and another day, I got up to within 2 feet of that half $ hole and I got solid reading and when I opened it up there was a nickel and a silver dime in the same hole.

Not a big deal, just thought it was interesting.

The 1270 sounds like a real honest machine to me! Does the business without a fuss.

I am pretty much a coin hunter and I like to run the 1270 in the iron disc mode set at max, when I get hit I trigger over to normal disc if it is still clean dig it. Typically I run the normal disc to accept nickels, if the junk gets to bad I will set it up past pull tabs.

I have found that the iron disc is a tad deeper than the normal disc.

The 1270 is a real work horse.

Yeah I still cuss my wife out when I had to hock my 1270 to help get her car back when she fell behind payments and got it repo!!!!! one of best detectors out there
