Something different...Slave auction token !

Got in a quick hunt this morning before the rain moved in. In an area close to where I dug the 1857 half dime earlier this week I got a deep hit that sounded worth digging. Down nearly 10 inches I pulled out what I thought was a large cent. After rubbing off some dirt I could see it was probably a hard times token. Turns out it was a token for a slave auctioneer in Charleston, South Carolina. W.W. Wilbur Auctions and Commission Merchant dated 1846. Nice early token. Wonder how it ended up here in NY ??? I checked eBay and there is one going for $111.00 with a couple hours left in the auction. That was the only good coin I dug. Been pounding that park pretty hard and the finds are getting scarcer.

Wow! I have been following your threads. You find some great stuff Ed!! My health is starting to come around and I should be able to hunt a bit this fall. What Explorer are you using? Care to share any settings or tips for a rookie like myself? Thanks!! Ted

Ted, I'm using the Explorer SE Pro. My settings are pretty simple. I use smart screen with no discrimination. So I'm hunting in all metal mode. Some people can't fathom doing that but I've been hunting that way since day one. I set up the detector years ago and can't even tell you what other settings I'm using. I just turn on and go now ! Park Pirate and I have learned the way to pull these old coins from hunted out trashy parks is to go low and slow. By that I mean get the coil as close to the ground as possible and move the coil as slow as possible. We're able to find coins amongst the trash items that way. Just about every good coin we find is either close to or in the same hole with a piece of trash. We just slowly brush the coil against the grass and investigate every target hoping to hear something promising. I saw some other guys hunting the same park last week and they were swinging from side to side so quickly there was no way they were going to find any old coins like Tony and I do. Plus they had their coils 3 inches off the ground! Tony and I appreciate them cleaning out the surface crap for us !!

Thanks! I have the SE. I have read the book and have Bryce's settings in mine. The only exception is I run in manual instead of auto sensitivity. I think I only have 8-12 hours on it as I had that brain hemorrhage last June and still haven't fully recovered. I only hunt an hour or two at a time. I remember those guys that used to swing a detector like a weed whacker! They always left some silver for me and my old Eagle Spectrum! Thank you for your tips! Everyone in this forum has been wonderful!
