Someone to talk to about upgrading

Right now I own a Tesoro Vaquero and Whites Eagle Spectrum. The Vaquero has been in the closet because the Spectrum is finding me more silver and that's what I mainly like to hunt for. Although the Spectrum has been great, the weight and price of batteries and age is becoming an issue and I would like to upgrade. Because I want to upgrade, I've been scouring the internet for different opinions on metal detectors that are kind of like the Spectrum...I've looked at the DFX, MXT Pro, the Minelab 705, and was told if I could, to try and go for a V3 or something a long those lines. My budget probably isn't enough for a V3 or E-trac, and I had my choice down to a MXT Pro, but I'm still unsure if it will get me the same kinds of silver finds I'm getting with the Spectrum due to the higher frequency/ EMI issues. I'm just wondering if there is somebody with a lot of knowledge about detectors that I could talk to on the phone and get some opinions/help. Thanks

imo, you should always buy Exactly what you want even if you have to wait to do so. You already have a quality detector (2!) to hold you until then.

Well the thing is I want to trade the Vaquero (plus cash) to get something else. The Vaquero is a nice machine, but I'm not going to use it anymore...and the Spectrum I have is costing me money because of the cost of batteries and its weight. I would like to try and get something soon. I'm not saying I need a V3 or E-trac, I would just like someone to talk to who knows what they are talking about to give it to me straight

A nice used DFX with rechargeable Battery pack, and standard pack would fit the bill your looking for..
Check with Larry IL He may have a new one set back !!

The MXT is a very good all around detector that excels at relic hunting and its very good on gold jewelry. There are many detectors that are better for silver and the Spectrum is actually better than the MXT on silver. Any of the Minelab machines, the Fisher CZ's and actually Garrett 2500,1500,1350 and the AT Pro. The Fisher Cz's and Minelabs are deeper than the Garrett's but all of these are hot on silver.

I'm not experienced enough with everything that is out there so I cant speak to your core question. But whatever you do (keep 1 or get a new one), I'd get rechargable batteries. I bought several sets of Eneloop AAs at the same time that I got my Safari and it was The way to go.

Since you said weight is an issue, I do not think you are gaining anything going to the MXT Pro. You may want to consider the 705.

Yea I don't know it's a tough decision. I wanted a DFX at first, but how does it stack up? I like the frequency shift, but heard it has some issues in EMI and doesn't go that deep

Bobby, just put the Vaquero up for sale and buy what you want with the money.
You might get lucky with a trade, but it doesn't seem like you've had any luck with that yet.

I second the concern about weight with the MXT. I have numerous detectors including the orignal MXT and that's the one thing I don't care for about it - the weight.

I guess I'm not completely concerned with the weight...I used the spectrum for 4 hours the other day and could still keep going if i wanted to. I just want somethign with great performance

The DFX is not very deep with the stock factory programs. White's set the programs up this way to insure smooth operation for novice users. By tweaking the programs, the DFX will definitely go deeper than your Spectrum and it's lighter also.

How can the AT Pro hit harder on silver when it runs at 15khz and the MXT Pro runs at 14khz?

Good question Bobby and the answer is it can't.There are low frequency detectors that are good on silver and high frequency detectors that are good on silver.Frequency is not as critical as some think........it is all hype that has grown around peoples opinions.

The frequency is a key component of what kind of metal the detector responds to best. Regardless of some people's opinions. However, that is only part of the equation. After the magnetic field of the coil has generated a signal that is sent to the control box of the detector, that signal has to be processed before you ever hear an audio signal or see a visual display. How that signal is processed, enhanced, amplified, and presented is what really differentiates between each of the brands (for the most part).
Here is a video on the DFX. It has several parts, but if you start this particular one at the 3:58 minute mark, it will explain why different detector manufacturers use the various frequencies they use. This is, of course, not an opinion, it is an engineering fact.

That vid convinced me that using as many freqs a possible and letting the computer analayze how all the responses differ is the way to go.
Its a wonder you guys with single freq machines ever even find a pulltab!!!

Idk, it's still hard to decide. I'm wondering if saving up a little and getting a V3i or something might be the way to go. Silver is what I'm looking for

This guy is your typical electronics teacher, i say this because i took electronics classes in college. There's no doubt he absolutely knows theories like most college electronic instructors, 'BUT' 'like most college instructors, i'll bet he has a hard time changing batteries in a flashlight.

I agree.....it just does'nt work like that out in the real world.......the differences between the various frequencies that are popular are pretty insignificant.

I have been a Whites guy since I started doing this. I own a DFX, and an MXT. I will be totally honest, I hate my DFX. Way to hard to program and really understand, for me. My MXT is my back up machine now. I also own a Minelab CTX and a Garrett AT Pro. I just recently got my CTX. My go to machine is the AT Pro for coin shooting. I have found more clad, silver coins and gold and silver jewelry with my AT Pro than all the other machines combined. Therefore I must say it is the best detector on the market at any price. Think about it. It's very light, has tone ID, has VDI, has pin point, it's wAter proof, and it's a beast at finding silver coins. Is it built as well as the MXT or CTX? No, but Garrett service is just about as good as Whites. Is it as deep as a CTX , I don't think so, but let's be honest most all my coins are found at about 4" or less. When this machine gives you a VDI of 87 and that beautiful warble tone, you can bet the farm it's a quarter. So much for the sales pitch. My Pro has paid for itself almost 3.5 times in a little over 2 years. Sicee January 2013 I have found about 30 silver coins and a box full of clad, couple dozen rings and a 5 gallon bucket of junk.
