somemore old silver

Today I had a few hour's to kill so I decided to go over to a nearby town that has a really old park in it. I last detected here in the early 80's but started here in 1976. After arriving I started swinging right in front of the car but after a couple of swing's a group of young girl's arrived for a photo shoot. So I meandered over to a quiet corner and within 5 minutes I got my first good hit. I did the wiggle and got a real nice high tone with a 180 on the meter, let's dig. After removing the plug and rechecking the hole, it's still there. That alway's makes me feel good. After removing a scoop of dirt there it is, a 1908 barber dime. After savoring the moment I worked my way up toward's a picnic shelter but the ground was so full of junk I soon got out of there. I need to go back there with a smaller coil. The next good hit was a 1919-S wheatie but not more than 10 feet away I got another high tone and a 180 on the meter. After removing the plug and flipping it over out falls a 1907-S Barber dime. This is the second time in about a month that I got two Barber's from a well worked spot. I think this GT is gonna work out after all. It's starting to get late and I'm hungry so I begin my slow search back to the car when I get a hit that I walked away from TWICE. The meter said 142 and I was trying to convince myself it was junk but the tone was just to round and good sounding so I dug and low and behold a 1920 Buffalo. Hope the pic's are ok.
Good hunting Gary

Hey Gearbox,

Thanks for putting a trip report out there for us to read, and including pics. Looks like the Barbers are in pretty good shape. Nice Job with the GT.

Gary, very nice hunt.A lot of times I hit old silver in an area the 173 numbers are passed by which are the Indians.Great post. HH Ron

Good finds! Nothing more satisfying that plucking some keepers from a spot that everybody says is hunted out. Differences in machines, coils, and a person's hunting style can produce finds that others didn't get, not to mention the advantage the GT has at being able to go deeper or unmask coins in trash.

Thank's guy's it was a fun hunt. I'm gonna try to get back there this weekend. Ron that is a good point on the 173 number. That is why I don't live or die by the numbers on the meter and use my ear's (as bad as they are) as the number one decision on when to dig with a little help from the meter. I will also say that anybody contemplating a GT should get a meter right away. If I had done that my learning curve would have been shortend considerably.
Good hunting, Gary
