some wierd switch or something

Its ceramic and has a copper plate type thing on both sides, the part im holding looks like a knob you eould use to pull it out of a socket of some sort. Any Ideas?
 
That is a electric fuse, it had a small wire that ran from one screw down the groove around the tip to the screw on the other side.
You just pushed them straight into the electric panel.
 
Fuse cutout sticks they are called.
