Some silver, wheat, glass, a smudge pot, and a 3 pointer at the buzzer!

I sneaked out for about an hour today to explore a homestead near my house. I had previously overlooked this wooded area until I was reviewing an 1877 atlas last weekend and noticed an unmarked structure. The site is off a main road but is easily overlooked. Well, the remains of the house were right where they were supposed to be. The site was littered with bottles and glass and metal. The ACE was not handling the environment very well. The soil is very dry and trashy. I had difficulty finding the 1941 quarter at only about 5 inches and ended up stabbing it. It was my first bad experience with the ACE. Granted, I do not own a sniper coil for it.

Other than the 1941 quarter, I also found a 1941 Wheatie, the bottle marked T.C.W. Co - Type 2 - USA. It is a corktop with a metal cap surrounding it. There are litterally hundreds of bottles on the site, most I saw were probably post 1930. I found the two ringer nearby. Any help with the ID on this type of ammo is appreciated.

I also "eyeballed" the large iron thingy. It turns out it is a smudge pot, which I had never heard of before. I am always happy when I learn something new in this hobby!

On the walk back to the car I spotted the 3 Point antler. I saw many deer, but none were missing an antler!

All in all not a great day, but I think it is a site with a lot of potential.

Check those old maps carefully!

Thats not a smudge pot. IT'S A LAND MINE. Seen a jillion of them having lived in Calif where they had to protect the crops from frost.......

A smudge pot (also known as a choofa or orchard heater) is an oil-burning device used to prevent frost on fruit trees. Usually a smudge pot has a large round base with a chimney coming out of the middle of the base. The smudge pot is placed between trees in an orchard, allowing the heat and smoke from the burning oil to prevent the accumulation of frost on the fruit of the grove. Smudge pots were developed after a disastrous freeze in Southern California in 1913 wiped out a whole crop.
