Some reasons why I went from Explorer to XT70.

First, its light and easy to hunt long hours in the field.
Also you do not have the pressure of having to keep it on the ground as the XT likes air.
With the 10.5" DD coil in 7.5 KHZ I am in the same playing field with the Explorer. Note: Explorer is more gutsy and gives a tad more depth.
Numbers and tone are easy to understand as it sounds like the Explorer and a quick glance at # will tell you how solid the hit is.
Tone is where its at.
Swing speed, Moderately fast. If you were to find a target and gradually swing faster and faster over it you will come to a point where the coil passes the tone. In other words when you hear the tone you are inches or a foot past the target. I find myself adjusting to this several times through the day. Specially when you go for a while with no targets. Find the happy swing speed that is comfortable and sounds off over the target, not past it.

Sweep speed vs audio response over the target was one of the things I had to adjust to coming from using Fishers. Fortunately most of my hunting is done at old sites where I can use a shovel. By sweeping from both directions I average the spot in between the audio responses and can get reliably close enough to the actual target center to avoid hitting it while digging. I know I should use the P/P mode but I just do not like the way it is setup on the Exterras.

Hi Bob, what I find is really cool is Minelab has so many great detector models that everyone can find something for them. I am working the Musketeer right now and it is also a great detector. Of course I love the Xterra 70 also and for me the 3Khz coil seems to work very well in my area. You sure do makes some nice coin finds out your way Bob. Ok Bob keep up the great work and I always enjoy the pics of your finds that you post. Happy hunting and God Bless.

I am also fairly accurate at target spotting. I sometimes use the Pinpoint but not often.

Thank you John. I wonder sometimes if I am doing this for nothing. Then I look at the views and realize that someone here is enjoying the statistics and maybe it will help answer a question for someone without them having to ask.
As more get comfortable with me, maybe they will start sharing their in field notes with the rest of us. So that we can compair Data..

I spent over a year and a half learning the in's and out's of the X-Terra lineup, posting my finds and stating my opinions. Recently that experience was challenged. When I posted what I thought should have answered his question, I got a lot of positive response and a couple negative comments. One comment in particular was very derrogatory and falsely accused me of being a paid representative of Minelab. When that happened, I had a choice. As Moderator of this Forum, I could have deleted those posts and listed the products I am currently testing for two other manufacturers. Or, since this is the X-Terra Forum and I am an X-Terra user, I could ignore them and spend my time detecting. I chose the latter.

With that said, I would like assure anyone reading this post that you are all welcome to post your finds, tell your stories, ask and answer questions and share your opinions. But making false accusations or posting personal attacks on other forum members will no longer be tolerated. HH Randy

All of your posts and those of others have enabled me to come to the conclusion that X-Terra 70 is the tector I must have. Hopefully I will be able to contribute some posts & pic's in the near future. Keep up the posts guys, it really does make a difference!! :canadaflag:

Congratulations Waterman, I'm sure your going to enjoy the machine a lot. It is an easy machine to learn and fun to operate. You will hold your own against any machine in the field. The X-Terra has so much to offer.

It looks like a few interesting points came to light through the thread Bob. I haven't noticed the lag on the signal. Perhaps that is something that you can pick up when not using the pinpoint.
I've been giving some considerable thought energy as to which toy to buy next. It's going to be a toss up between the X-Terra 70 and the Explorer. I love the refined discrimination of the Explorer, but am quite concerned about it's weight. Mainly due to an injury to my arm,I couldn't swing the Explorer for any length of time without the aid of a harness. The X-Terra on the other hand, is quite light and versatile. The occasional nugget hunt sounds like a good idea. I live near some old gold rush spots.
I've got a question for you if you could answer it for me if you can?
You have indicated that you don't use the pinpoint function very often, but when you do use it ( with the 10.5in round DD) do shallow screw caps still give off a louder than coin sound when you pinpoint them? I tried this at a detecting shop last Christmas, and was surprised that the 5x10 high frequency coil didn't give off the same sort of sound that you get when you use the standard coil.
Thanks.
Mick Evans.

Hi Mick,
To be perfectly honest with you I have always used the DD, so I can't compare. I will tell you this though. Shallow targets all sound loud when using pinpoint. The beer cap is a stick in the eye. They come in like a quarter or Large and if any depth to them near impossible to pass up.
On your choice of machines, you pretty much answered your own question. Weight #1 and the Explorer is not an XT70 in the gold field. I don't hunt Gold but have compared the two with very small Gold items and the XT70 dominates.

G,day Mick. I can relate to the arm problem. I damaged tendons in both forearms as well as both wrists due to sports about fifteen years ago and although I get times when they are fine for months I also get times when they drive me nuts. I tried an Explorer a few times and found they were, for me that is, too front heavy when used for extended periods. I can swing the 70 for hours on end without a problem and I have never had a moment complaint from the old injuries when doing so. If you have gold in your area then the 70 is it.
Although the Explorer operates on varying freq's which encompass the 18khz range or thereabouts it still will not come within a bulls roar of the 70 on gold. The Explorers freq's are spread and power shared (ok some will correct that and refine it then explain it in detail , analyse it and spit it out a different way to my own language) where the 70s are all punched into whatever freq it is operating on.
I have tried Explorers and Quat's on gold and species which the 70 has found and many will not even register on them. This goes for the Sovereigns too. They may encompass the said freq range but dont exploit it as far as I can see as a single freq machine does.
But they are damn good at what they do and thats finding coins.
Ultimately the choice is yours and what suits you.
Have a good one.

My thinking on them was to use the Explorer for coin hunting, or the X-T70 for coins and gold. I sure wish that there was a detector with the explorer's capability in an X-Terra package. I guess that that will happen in time. I gave the Cortes and DeLeon a very serious looking at, but would find the single tone in discrimination very annoying.
Sorry to hear about you arms BT. I had 3 slipped disks in my neck 18 months back, which has damaged the nerves to my right bicep. So I know how frustrated you can get at times. Hope your toe is mending nicely; my wife has the same problem at the moment (my eldest son stepped on it).
Bob. I hadn't considered that the X-Terra could go close the the Explorer for depth, but given that it's the coil that determines depth, it makes good sense.
All the best.
Mick Evans.

What is it that the Explorer has that you think you need. (Curiosity)
If you need to look for the mate to an earring I can understand. But as far as hunting coins and Jewelry AND Gold, you're going to run all maetal or close to it anyway. I liked the Explorer too but never used all the Bells and Whistles.

I'm looking for more refined discrimination. Our $1 and $2 coins are in the same area as screw caps, and it would be nice to be able to leave a lot more screw caps in the ground. The pinpoint on the X-Terra's often let you know that a target is a screw cap, but not as often as an Explorer; hence my original question to you about the pinpoint with the DD coil.
Mick Evans.

Ive suffered a broken neck many years ago and I still swing the Explorer and Musky and GT. But the Xterra is a nice change.
