:rage:So I went for a little ride today, down to a local campground that used to be small town back before the 40's. I had no intentions of detecting or anything, but was just driving past and thought I'd stop for a look around. Well what a surprise to find that someone had apparently thought it was a good idea to swing a detector! Only problem was there was about 50 little holes with the dirt laying beside the holes and whatever discarded finds as well!!! So instead of enjoying my little visit to this site, I spent about a half hour walking around trying to at least make someone elses ignorance a semi presentable mess!!! It blows my mind that anyone would think it was ok to just leave open holes like that??? What would this individual think if someone came to their yard and dug a bunch of holes and just left them? It's people like this that ruin the "real" metal detectorist from enjoying their hobby!!! It's crap like this that deter people from allowing us in their yards and on their properties! Alright, so I think i'm done venting now! And yes, I do feel a little better! But seriously, if you're new to this hobby, please keep your manners in mind when you're out!

You're right, cju; and it is ok to vent (I think). I think you are doing the right thing by writing about it so that others will learn that detecting is not just about going out and digging treasure. As soon as we buy or get a detector, we all have a responsibility to use it properly, and to adopt methods of item recovery which will keep everyone happy, not just ourselves. Good job in reporting, and great work in cleaning up as best you could. HH

cju-----Thanks so much for repairing the mess that those eggheads left behind them.----I see you are fairly new to the forum here (don't know how long you have been detecting) but you are a REAL CREDIT to this great hobby for doing that sir.----Fortunately jerks like that are in the minority---unfortunately, as the old saying goes "it only takes one bad apple" and acts like the damage they have done is what's just killing this great hobby---we ALL pay for it.-------Anybody that does things like that are either unbelievably unresponsible or unbelievably stupid (or both).----Thanks again for caring for this hobby & thanks for your post.----------Del

Good deed and good job in repairing that mess.
Unfortunately he's likely wrecking many other spots as we text.
Those type you have to catch them in the act and try to guide them in the proper technique
of retreving and filling there holes.

What ever happened to common sense?
Are parents not teaching it to there children anymore?
I absolutely hate watching some of the Youtube videos and seeing these nuckle heads
with there long-handled shovels in our Parks.
Even saw a guy recently in a Tot Lot with one.
( JUST HAD TO VENT )

I wish the Detector Manufactures would get together and produce a DVD on proper retrieval techniques, and
include one with each detector purchased. I think it would go a long way in preserving our hobby. Because if we lose our places
to hunt, not only do we suffer, but the Manufactures will suffer also.

If you see Youtube Videos with improper MD ethics, do you not be afraid to post a comment in the comment section, and if you feel it is necessary, give the video a thumbs down. Some of the Yotubers that make md videos do not even know what they are doing when it comes to digging a plug and using an MD.

Those people should stay home

I ran into that same problem at the river a few months ago and took my yard rake and covered up the holes left by someone else. Garrett shows proper recovery of finds in the DVD I got for my detector. It's not a lot, but if you watch the people when they recover their targets or finds, you should have a clue how to act. Getting on Find's forums has taught me a lot. I pop most targets with a screwdriver instead of digging unless they are over 2-3 inches deep.
It's about educating yourself and other people and it's about proper attitude and consideration for others. It's not complicated at all. Thanks for taking care of someone else's holes to protect our hobby. HH.

It would appear that we need less gun control and more "SHOVEL" control in this country.

Several years ago me and another guy hunted an old out door drive inn. Spent 4 day there and found about $60.00 in change. Every morning that we went back a good part of our plugs were flipped over. Spent about 10 minutes every day repairing the damage. The last day of our hunt we went back to the car and was discussing our finds along with the flipped surface plugs. ??? As we look across the field we noticed crows flying in flipping the surface plugs to get crubs and worms left behind. Now that's clever.

The OP story clearly indicates bad detecting ethics, but like CH stated, even good ethics can be foiled by nature.

Years ago my Grandmother passed away. She lived in a house built in 1875. I had just started detecting so I would detect the yard the weeks before the house was being prepared for sale.
My Brother confronted me about leaving my digs open. I assured him that I properly returned the plug so that you couldn't hardly tell I was there. Sure enough I went to the old place 2 days in a row.
The second day all my plugs were dug back out with the grass cap flipped over. I was perplexed until I read about animals redigging the plugs for whatever reason. Then it all made sense.
I have since then seen my dog redig plugs that I just got done reseating.

Most places I metal detect I don't usually go back the second day, unless its a corn field. Now you got me wondering Ism !!!! Has this been happening on a regular basis and didn't know it.
