So I live in a very small town, 150 residents. A retired couple that I know begged me to do some work in their basement. I am so freaking busy with my business, I couldn't commit to doing all that they needed done. I have very large projects on the go in the city, I'm swamped. I did however take one employee to their house, and spent a day doing what we could. Labour and materials were would have been $800 to $1000, but I didn't charge them a dime. I asked about detecting, and if they would let me do their yard, and not let the other out-of-town detectorist do it. They said sure, anytime!

I went there today (first day off in weeks), and I was not very happy with what I found. There were plugs that were healing, obviously they let the other guy do it. He left his trash targets in the holes. Why??????!!!!!???? I didn't find one penny. What a bummer.

Sorry, had to vent...

So much for keeping there word .:sadwalk:
Cant be that many people :detecting: there or are
coming in from other towns ?

Some guy that works for CP Rail...he is in town periodically for work. He stays at the bunkhouse, probably is bored so detects all the towns he stops in. There are a limited number of yards here, so it bugs me. Whatever, it's a free country (and he is from the U.S.), but what is up with having to dig junk out of a previously dug plug??

Giving up $1000 in business to hunt a yard was a pretty steep move. But you made a deal and they seemed to have broken it? Maybe you should send them a bill to let them know you are serious? Or maybe they were old plugs?????

I did the work for no charge because I wanted to be nice, the detecting was just a cool bonus. We dismantled and corrected some work that another contractor did very poorly. Their new drywall was literally falling off the ceiling. Everything was out of square...I felt bad for them. This is a small town, gotta help your neighbour. I do pro bono work once in a while...

Maybe the guy who did the bad drywall work dug the plugs!?

Think Karma. What comes around goes around. You will be rewarded another way. You sure did a great deed for your neighbor. Sorry to hear the detecting didn't work out this time. GL and HH. Matt

Well, that sucks, after you helped them out. Hope the other 149 residents stick to their promises!

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Live and learn. Your best intentions may be disrupted by another human being.

Sorry to hear that, some people are just incredible. As others have said, what goes around comes back around. I am sure you will be rewarded in some other way. What you did was a very nice thing and I completely believe in karma. I have been scr%&#d so many times I lost count, however, I always go forward honestly in life and living this way has treated me well. The times I lost out have been made up for with luck in other areas. I am sure your honest and hard work will pay off. Maybe not with those people but I believe that being good and honest towards others always comes back around. Good luck going forward and I wish you a spectacular find in your near future. -Marc

Reminds me of my sad tale. I've been doing research on my area and have located some old foundations in the woods. I've visited three and at each one there are unfilled holes from someone who got there ahead of me. Granted, it is in the woods but I still fill in my holes - LEAVE THE SITE IN BETTER CONDITION THAN YOU FOUND IT.

No good deed goes unpunished. Hope things go better next time around! HH

Isn't that the truth. When I moved to this location I gave my old detecting partner a ton of hot tips with the understanding that we would get together on the sites. Later he tells me that he is not interested in the main site anymore. Turns out he stripped the place all summer then sold everything. The plan was to hook up in the fall......On another forum I lent out two hunting knives to a Search And Rescue employee in Alberta to check out. My knives, and I payed the shipping. He screwed me on them after months of ducking and diving. I will say that most people are pretty stand up, but there are some that will slip it to you the moment your back is turned.

I believe you are right about the karma thing. Not even a week later, and I score my best coin find ever, a fantastic key date 1903s Barber dime!

Stinkfoot, I am sorry to hear about your bummer hunting buddy situation. I feel sick about that for you! My story here has convinced me to trust that good things will happen when you least expect it.
