Some Old Finds

Found several years ago while excaving a slave cabin in Mid. TN. 3 lead projectiles - a three ringer, smaller unknown, 7/8 " lead ball,no holes. The large disis from a Wheeler & Wilson sewing machine. Some marbles, a knife ? , a flat button and a metal whats it. Any ideas on these would be appreciated . Oh and the beads I found at this site while sifting,Native American ?. Thanks for looking .

those are interesting finds, what is a disis? like a name tag or something? did you string the beads or did you find them as is?sorry for answering you question with questions!

The beads were found one at a time while sifting, they appear to be clay. I meant to
type disk, sorry. Questions are good. Some of these finds Im not sure of myself ,
just guesses .

Great Finds. How long did it take you to sift all that? And how deep did you go? Beads are excellent, so is the knife. What's that made of? If anyone in your area deals or collects Indian artifacts, I would have them look them over. They could be your best finds ever, if real. Isn't it amazing how much is lost (and found) over the years. Just look at the collection someone would have if we counted everyone's items together. It would make a great museum. Keep digging and HH.

Thanks Coinnut, I worked on this site 3 months , this is just what I found , many better finds
were made . The knife is rusted , steel , Im asuming ? I had the beads looked at by the state
archy and he seemed to believe they were Native American. What could the other 2 lead
projectiles be ? I've always been curious about them, not the 3 ringer.

If the small bullet is 36 caliber it looks like bullet number 79 in McKee & Mason's Civil War Projective book. If so it is a Savage Navy revolver bullet. Good luck.

Well that would make the beads very desirable, since they were evaluated and believed genuine. Great stuff. The smaller bullet looks to me like a late 1800's to early 1900's bullet, and the big round one is probably a musket ball. They ranged generally from the 1700's to the 1860's. But anyone can use one later than that if they still have the gun.Someone with a bullet identification book may give you a better idea on them. Up here we find lot's of them because of the quantity of early sites. These are most of my musket balls that I found over the years. That must have been a fun time to sift for finds like that. Surprised they let you keep the finds. Around here if you do that kind of work, it's for them. It's your labor you are giving, but I don't think you get to keep anything.HH

Thanks, That is so COOL . I wasnt sure it was even old . The site I was digging had been used
at least into the 30's , my grandfather remembered the cabin standing . Thanks again

WOW, You really have a nice collection . This is the only one I've ever found .
The reason I got to keep my finds was because it was family land , I invited the
team in . I wanted to learn the correct procedure of excavation.

hi all, that sure is a nice batch of relics, echostar61. i believe it just might be a large caliber musketball you have there. it just looks so big, like a .75 cal.+. but wow, i really like this group of relics. they fit well into about the 1850's - 1860's period. and it looks like a revolver round, .36 cal. as well as .58 cal. 3 ringers. heavy, aren't they? wtg, and hh,

Thanks GrayGhost, they are heavy and none are hollow , both bullets are flat on the bottom.
I used to keep better records of my finds, then I just started putting them in boxes and drawers.
I now have things I have no clue where I found them, but this group I kept together in a shodow box
as they were found on family land. Thanks for looking Gray I appreciate it

wow, echostar, you know, i looked at your pic this a.m. before my second cup of coffee... and missed the obvious. you have what appears to be a native american beaded necklace there...and a nice knifeblade. the 4 round things in the top left corner remind me a lot of clay marbles. really nice finds, i wish i could find stuff like that. really. hh,

Thanks GrayGhost, this little pile cant hold a candle to the things I've seen you post .
There are 4 clay marbles in the corner.
