Some old coins.

I've been getting out a bit more, the v nickel came from the veggie stand site, they have all the top soil piled up to re-spread at some time so I ran the etrac around the piles and the v was right on top(no Digging). The roise came from the old ball diamond, the 29 wheat penny came from my brother in-laws 1860 farm house, this place puzzles me because i've hunted it twice now and only a wheatie both times. Sunday night I was showing my wife a picture of a large cent and told her I would probably never find one around here, I got permission from a farmer to hunt his land where a school used to stand, the old maps show it stood there for about 50 years, so monday morning I gave it a try and found the 2 indians and large cents( it was a thrill when I found the 1st one and amazing when the second showed up). I have to say I was a little disapointed not to find any silver, I think maybe it was detected before and someone cherry picked the silver out, the farmer said it was never hunted before:nono:. I may try the field again, the problem there is the bean stubble is 6 to 8 inches tall so not able to get the coil to the ground. Well thanks 4lookin and HH to all Mike

Dang, maybe I'd better show my wife a picture of a large cent too because the odds are pretty slim to find one out here. Nice finds!

Nice finds.
It's pretty cool when you finally hit a site where the oldies just keep coming.
Been awhile since I hit a place like that , but I know sooner or later if I put my time in,something will turn up.

thats the thing about metal detecting....the thrill is in NOT knowing ahead of time....sometimes you get skunked....then BAM you find two largies in one day. thats what makes this hobby so entertaining. very nice finds!

I'd call that a successful hunt. I'm still searching for my first largie. I guess it would help if I got out to hunt once in awhile? HH-CC

Awesome finds! Personally I'd call that a VERY good day, even without a silver! I've never found a large cent and I'm happy any time I find an old coin other than a wheatie....heck as far as that goes, somedays I'm over-joyed to see a wheatie...lol. I'd definitely hunt that field again if it were me.

Randy, I have a feeling that there is a gold coin in that spot, and if someone did cherry pick the silver they may have missed the gold like they missed the large cents. I have a book about the old school house's in my area, it cost 5 dollars a school year or 2 cords of heating wood per child to attend in the 1880's. I can see kids bringing a 5 dollar gold coin to pay for there schooling. DREAMING. Thanks 4 the reply Mike

Yeah that $5 dollar gold scheme sounds good, but I bet a lot of "po folk" did the installment plan !!
I can't imagine trusting an 1880's kid to take $5.00 to school unless it was in a lock box .

Killer finds Mike - congrats ! :beers:

Great job. I've found only 1 large cent. 1855 Upright 55's, in my years hunting.

Way, way too cool of finds.... They look awesome. hit it when the stubble is tilled....

Thx 4 post,

Moose.
