Some old coins and a couple of nice rings today!

My wife and I had a great day out today. She said she wanted to find an old engagement ring with a diamond. Well, first we stopped at a local baseball diamond and looked around. Found about $8, or so and she wasn't finding much. I found a nice silver ring with 4 mother-of-pearl insets, which got her interested again. She was just about to ask if we could head off to another spot, when she gets an iffy signal on her 2500 and digs it to find a beautiful 18kt gold ring. The sapphire and all 12 diamonds tested real! Beauty!
After a little while longer, we headed off to another sports oval which isn't used much any more, but was very popular many years ago. We've always found a few old coins there. Today was no exception. She thought she was going to best me with oldest coin of the day when she walked over with a nice 1874 British shilling. That put her in the lead until a bit later when I dug up a (date barely readable) 1807 George III halfpenny! We found 6 halfpennys (1807,1905,1911,1913,1922x2), 5 old pennys (1911,1920x2,1922,1942), 3 sixpences (1948, 1962x2) and the 1874 shilling. Also finished off the day with $29.20 in current stuff!
Cheers,
Toby

I need a day like that, great finds.

Nice finds, thats what keeps it interesting, what mode was you detecting in with the 2500, when you found the gold ring.:clapping:

I believe she was using jewelry mode. Since Aussie coins ring up different to the US coins the Garrets are set up for (in coin mode), we usually use jewelry mode. I think this ring came up around the 3.5 area. Ironically, the lower the gold content (ie. 9kt vs. 18kt) the higher the signal is. This is because a 9kt ring is over 60% some other metal (depending on what color they wanted the gold). A higher percentage of gold (e.g. 18kt or 22kt, etc) means a lower signal on the 2500. Moral of the story - You gotta dig a lotta pull tabs if you wanna find gold!
Sometimes I get in a hurry and only dig signals which are probably silver or a $1 or $2 coin. By doing so, I have found a LOT of $1 & $2 coins, and they add up quick, BUT, there's probably no telling how many gold rings I've walked right over. I'm starting to realize just how right these guys are that always say "Dig EVERYTHING".
Always learning.
Cheers,
Toby

The silver ring I found was about 4" deep. My wife found her ring only about 2 feet away from where I found mine, after I walked away in a different direction. She found the gold ring about 2" down. There were lots of those cardboard/foil round covers that you peel off the top of a juice drink (I think?) and her gold ring gave exactly the same signal as one of those (probably why I missed it). We found the rings along the fence line of 3rd base at the baseball diamond. We had a local guy give us a tip to look around there, as he had found rings there in the past. It seems the players must remove jewelry before playing, and they sometimes lose them where they lay their bags, along the fence.
That local guy has given us a few tips that have all paid off! We have learned that if someone walks up and seems interested, we're more than happy to chat and ask them questions, too!
Cheers!
Toby
