Some nice digs yesterday...

I haven't posted here for quite awhile; I usually find myself park or yard hunting for coins, with my Minelab Explorer my machine of choice.

However, I LOVE my Gold Bug Pro, and use it any time I have a rare chance to hunt an iron-filled relic site (or just for a "change of pace" at the park).

Yesterday, I had another chance to hunt an 1850's military site in Oklahoma, and ran the Gold Bug Pro with 4.5x7 elliptical coil. Along with a number of other nice digs, I managed these keepers -- each of which were nearly "hidden" due to very close proximity to square nails...

This machine is perfectly suited for unmasking good (often low or mid tone) targets from amongst dense iron trash; even though I'm not very good at it due to inexperience, this is a great weapon to use in this type of hunting scenario.

nice finds :clapping:
you say you were running the goldbug pro with a 4.5x7 elliptical coil ?
what was the coil off of ?
how did it handle ?

SORRY! My bad! It was the 5x10 elliptical coil, the Fisher coil made for Gold Bug Pro/G2 machines. I have a 4.5" x 7" coil for my Explorer, and so that's what was in my mind when I gave the (wrong) dimensions of the Fisher coil. I can't edit my post above, to fix it, as it's been too long since I posted and the edit period has expired. So, just to clarify again -- it was the 5x10 Fisher elliptical. SORRY!!

Way to go Steve,
Good to see that bug in your hands again. Hope you get more time to hunt!!!

Be Well

Hi Steve,
ME TOO!
I have used it primarily since it first came out except for the last 6 months or so I have been playing with a SST. But for dense trash and Iron its my go to for now. After all that time I am constantly still impressed by the scenarios this baby is able to pull good targets out of.. I cant believe some of the nails Ive pulled out of the way to find good targets. Your Explorer is a great machine as well a complementary pair for sure. The Explorer in the more open areas to punch depth and Id ability the GB for the dense trash or nails and for better sens to small targets like small gold or brass.
I like a machine that can pay its way!!LOL

Glad to hear you feel the same way. It's really a terrific machine.

Yeah, I like to think I have a good bit of the "bases covered" with an Explorer for deep coins, and the GB Pro for relics in iron...

I'm not familiar with the SST that you mention. What type of machine is that?

Steve

Hi Steve,

The Sierra Super Track is a offshoot of the MXT platform.
Advertised as a turn on and go machine. Super simple it has 7 tones and VDI but has No disc control.
So basically they call it a all metal accept silent search machine but it is running through the M6 disc circuit that is set to Zero.
It is advertised as having the gain of the MXT with the Id of the M6 and the tracking of the GMT. If you look at a M6 and a MXT the gain nomenclature is different. The SST matches the MXT. I wanted a little bit more info in the form of the tones for my jewelry hunts. IT does not replace the GB in dense targets or for overall sensitivity but for me the M6 id resolution in the foil to tab range is much better for working the foil. You have from -95 to 0 in the iron range. 0 foil to nickel 22 and between there tabs mostly hit at 32 then to zincs at 65 and that's where the scale lines back up with the G2 and the coins hit almost the same. On the G2 the foil to Zinc range is between foil 40 to 47 with nickles hitting at 58 most tabs 62 63 -- 65 on corroded zincs to a steady 79 on clean ones. You have that extra resolution in the foil range and 95 points in the iron range.
Of Coarse Dave J. had his hands on both platforms and in some ways they perform closely. (HOT ON THE GOLD)
Both can better the other in different areas. The GB for its tone break, true all metal as well as speed and separation great Id but only 99 segments and two tones. And the SST for its ID resolution 7 tones and mineral handling ability depth in bad ground. Really its no slouch either it separates very well and with a SEF coil it feels pretty fast.

Have fun
Jim

Interesting write-up, Jim. Very cool. That increased resolution in the "foil" range sounds really interesting...

Not sure it would help in my favorite park, though...there is SO MUCH in the way of foil, can slaw, and tabs...even with increased resolution in the "40 to 47" range of the GB Pro, with as much can slaw and foil bits as exist in this park, I'm not sure I could differentiate between the trash and the gold EVEN WITH more resolution...

But, it nonetheless sounds like a very interesting machine. Do you feel you are making more gold finds, using this unit?

Steve

No Not Really I do feel more relaxed and with the 7 tones I can fixate a little less on the meter. And I feel like I dig less foil but more bottle caps is its weekness.
It was really hard for me at first to set the GB aside and the trust in a new machine has to be earned. But when I started finding all the same targets as the GB and tiny foil the confidence in it came. Also it added more confidence in the silver area. I'm picking up more silver than I used too.
In a park situation like yours I would use the GB for sure and hunt it as you normally do but pay attention to irregular VDI that have clean sound and tight pinpoint. I check tones of targets with my pin point before deciding to dig its one more piece of info in your arsenal and gives the best size indication.
Ive dug a mountain of foil but every time I hear the gold its just like HMM that was different.
Sometimes probably most the time its just luck you put your coil over something of value someone lost but then, do you decide to dig it?

Interesting that you say that every time you hear gold, you say "hmm...that was different..."

I am going to do a little messing around, with gold rings, and targets that read with the same ID as those rings. I have done this before, with my Explorer, and couldn't hear much difference at all between, for instance, rectangular tabs that ID the exact same numbers as my wedding band, and the band itself...but I'm not sure I've done exactly this testing with my GB Pro...

Gives me something to do while we have snow on the ground! :)

Steve

Hi Steve,
Were covered in snow as well now.
When you do some of your testing you might want to try different orientations of rings and circling the targets for full info.
Strange some rings in a flat orientation will double beep but only in one direction.
When I say Hmm that was different its not just about the sound but also A vdI that just hasn't popped up all day. You have to dig allot of trash but you really get to know your VDI to audio correlation if that makes any sense.
Two tones is not allot to work with but there is signal quality within the tones. I use a DJ quality headphone and as expensive as detector headphones are they just do not have the dynamic response of a high quality music headphone. With my headphones I can hear the background hum of the electronics on my G2 My Grey Ghosts its non existent but I like my ghosts for my P.I. machine.

Good luck in your quest as we all are there with you!!
Jim

Nice finds buddy. I love my G2 I really don't coin shoot though. HH
