some junk I have found

Hello all first time poster long time reader. I have an Excal 1000 and it seems like all I do is find this type of junk. I have found 1! gold for about 500+ hours of hunting and trust me I know the machine very well by now. I am assuming that this area just gets worked too much with too little activity, and I have been all over this area so I was thinking about getting a PI unit, any suggestions. Was thinking the infinium but have no clue about PI machines except for what I read and can glean from you fine folks. Any feedback on PI

Yoiur hunch is probably right. But let me ask you this: What are the beach dynamics where you hunt? I am assuming that the waves are small and that you rarely get a lot of movement of sand and that there is not a real stron current. Maybe a 2 foot tide? These factors could be a major part of the problem. If that is the case, after Wilma passes, that is the time to get out there, if you can.

if you are digging pulltabs and bits of aluminum, resy assured you will dig that 14k beauty when you wander over it. sometimes we feel like we will never get any of the gold. It's SOOOO much sweeter then, when you finally shake the scoop and see that beauty sitting there winking at you. You don't need another detector, just keep hunting, your turn is coming. HH

At least your finding some pretty cool shells and bullets and stuff. I agree with bottomfeeder, the good stuff has to be under the coil in order to dig it. If you were having major falsing problems with extraneous noises from ground mineralization or something, I'd say look to another detector or try and see how to ground balance yours, but other wise, keep hunting. I noticed that Mike from VA had some really good posts either on the Minelab Quatro forum or the Beach forum where he tells how he hunts the beaches. Very imformative post, I'd say it's worth looking it up. He goes in some kind of zig zag pattern I think. At any rate, don't give up and keep reading the posts like I do for information. I do know Mike uses an excallibur which I hear is unsurpassed for beach hunting and I use the Quatro which seems wonderful for any kind of hunting as long as you don't get the housing wet. I have almost zilch problems with salt water or mineralized sand. The unit goes real deep and has great ID. Just thought I'd throw that in there and good luck.: OH, by the way, I do use the Quatro and I havn't found any rings YET, either but I know it can find them, cause the other Quatro hunters are finding them, I just have to be in the right place to do it.:):(:)

Thanks for the info, I guess that maybe it is just the fact that there isn't a whole bunch out there. It also seems like the depth that I used to get is no longer there. I have not been real rough with the unit but it has been bumped around a bit. Is it possible that the unit has lost some of its sensitivity? I used to pull dimes from 14" and now it seems like I only find things 6-8 inches down. Anyone have any experience with the MINELAB ECAL 1000 doing this? I am frustrated and on the verge of sending it in for a checkup.
Cheers and good hunting.

willko, I use a Garrett Sea Hunter Mark II and it is pi, but the Excal does have the nice feature of discriminating out the ferrous iron. This is an advantage in trashy areas as I may be digging junk and my buddy coastwise is halfway down the beach diggin' the good stuff, however I do find my share of good loot. I'm a Garrett fan but I don't believe that the Infinium would be a good surf hunting choice. My dealer told me that it was kinda' funky out there. I was also told that Florida sands are real course and that it sands in deeply where the good targets may be too deep to detect. After the passing of the storm, get out there asap and give it a sweep and let us know how you do.HH
