Some finds at a recent site

I've hit this site 3-4 times, and although its been hit hard by a lot of hunters, it still seems to produce some decent finds. Guess I should keep going back as long as things stay productive. Finds from the colonial period up to turn-of-the-century have been found. First, here's a pic of most of the keepers, followed by a few close-ups.

Here are some of the buttons. Nothing great, although I did find a cool 1812 era pewter artillery button.

Not many coins, but did find some nice cut pieces of spanish silver. Even got dates off 2 of them - 1709 and 1727.

Also found this very tiny silver piece. Never seen anything like it. I suspect it may be a coin, especially since it's holed. Maybe a 1/4 reale?? Please speak up if you know what this piece is? Showing it next to an IH for size comparison.

I'll continue to post any new finds from my next outings.

Hey man super nice finds...Keep on digging that site. Sure looks productive to me.

Wish you the best of luck on the rest of your vacation. Keep us updated on that site. We did a little research on your coin and it looks like it may be a British token. There are a lot more copper tokens that exist so a silver one is a great find. The British copper tokens were issued during a coinage shortage in the 1780's and 1790's. They didn't give a specific date on the silver tokens.

You must REALLY know your detector to be able to pull that much "good stuff" from a hard hunted site!!
Love the "pieces of eight" and that little coin! Also thats an awesome shoe buckle!
Congratulations and HH! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

That small silver coin looks to be very old and I would think Old World vintage. Good hunting, David @ Dixie

Bill, Great finds! By chance do you have any info on the old lock. I found one just like it at a 1831 farm house.

My original thought was that this might be a 1/4 reale, based on something I'd seen before. Sure enough, when I checked out my Krause book, as well as another source, I pretty much confirmed it as being a 1/4 reale. The attached pic from the book matches up very favorably with the coin, although mine has no date, mint mark or denomination. May be some other variety than shown in the book, as apparently they were produced by several different countries in the 1700s. The size comparison in the pic is slightly off, but matches perfectly in the other book. Anyway, I'm calling it spanish silver.

Don't really know much about locks, but don't think its that old. Maybe late 1800s at best.

It's been a while! Hope you are doing well. Than 1/4 reale is more than cool! <img src="/metal/html/please.gif" border=0 width=29 height=15 alt=":please">

Hey, I understand you've had an addition to the family - congrats!! Allen told me all about it. Must have been quite an experience. Glad it all worked out. HH to you.

Allen is pretty sick right now. We got out for a short hunt on New Year's eve, and he got sick over the weekend. You can see my Best Find of '04 on the coinstrike forum. That was the day we got her. You guys keep the colonial stuff coming!

Found the same lock at Stonewalls position Broad Run Va (Manassas Airport).Lock looks to have been shot open. <img src="/metal/html/confused.gif" border=0 width=15 height=22 alt=":?">

Looks like a warded brass padlock made by S. B. Co. (Slaymaker-Barry). If so, it dates from the late 1880's to 1900.
I think one or two other mfgrs. made similar locks during that period, and the same design was used on no-name locks sold by Mongtomery Ward, c. 1895.
Best of luck,
Buckram

I found a lock exactly like this, it was missing the back but still had the top locking piece. On the back side of the pivoting piece it says...

No other markings that I can find. I also found a great button that I will post a pic of later.
