Some dumb questions about CZ3D

(Not really dumb questions, I hope, just questions from an ignorant person.)

I got an F70 a couple of years ago, which has an audio mode (4H) which is supposed to be based on the Enhanced setting on the CZ3D. Ever since, I have been increasing intrigued by the CZ3D, because this mode makes great sense for a coin-shooter. Months ago I had an opportunity to buy a couple. One was used, with a 1021 Serial # and looked a little beat up. The other was "almost new" and cost less. Anyway funds were low at the time and I am starting to kick myself that I did not get one or the other.

I started reading on Tom's site, which has some very enjoyable deep technical detail. But I feel like I am missing the basic CZ3D 101 stuff from 30,000 feet so to speak. There is no Wikipedia on the CZ3D so far, so here are my dumb questions:

1. Was the CZ3D the FIRST multi-frequency detector for Fisher? Or for that matter, for anyone?

2. Are the other units in the CZ** line also dual frequency?

3. I understand that the knobs are obviously analog controls. But was the machine (internally) considered to be an analog metal detector? Is the version in production today an analog detector?

4. Is there any significant difference between the CZ3D machines and the other machines in the CZ** line other than the Enhanced Mode Audio (and the fact that some others are waterproof)?

5. I have heard Tom quoted as saying that the 1021 serial#s do not need to be tuned? If he tunes a brand new current model, does it become as well tuned as a 1021?

6. If you could buy a beat up 1021 unit or a brand new in box unit for the same price, which would you buy?

The Cz6 was the first 5 / 15 frequency Fisher.

If I recall correctly another brand I will not name here had the first multi frequency release. Claiming 17 frequencies operating at the same time.

2. Yes, all CZ's are dual frequency machines. There was only 1 difference in the coil connector on one machine. All others can exchange coils.

For all other questions please read --> http://www.dankowskidetectors.com/discussions/read.php?2,479,480#msg-480 (hope this link doesn't harm any boards rules. if, so I feel sorry about and please delete this, admin.)

Thanks for the link! A good thumbnail overview of the series. I hope it can stay.

Chainfire,
1. No. and No.
2. Yes
3. the CZ 5, 6, and 3D are considered to be analog. the CZ 7, 7a and 70 are considered to be digital (and have membrane switches instead of knobs)
4. Basically, no. Same underlying technology. Although the digital units have a delay I don't like, but a back-light I do like.
5. Not exactly. Tom's 'tuning' primarily adjusts the ID ranges and can 'bump up' the sens and stability a little. Then he 'certifies' the depth in his calibrated coin garden. If it's a wimp to start with, it will just be a really well-mannered wimp when he's done.
As far as 1021 units not needing tuned or 'certified'...most folk disagree. Every unit made was/is unique. You might get a really good one. You might not. The odds are just better with the 1021's.
6. I would have to test them first. My first instinct is to ALWAYS buy the heavily used unit over the closet queen. Why? It really must have worked well for someone to use it that much! The one in the closet must not have.
Then I'd send it off to Tom.

As an aside, I've seen the 'certified' ones showing a max depth on a clad dime anywhere from 9 inches to units with well over 13 inches in neutral soil. For a while, the newer units were as bad a 7.5", but I understand the factory has since fixed the issue.
(My 1021 certified to 13.5" with the 10.5 coil, but it was a hot one to start with.)

Good luck,
hh

Mike,

Thanks for this very well thought out detailed reply. The landscape is slowly becoming clearer through the clouds to me.

For the record, several people recently have told me the "old beat up machine that still works" would be less of a gamble than the new production.
