Some CZ-6 related questions

Hello to all. I am new to the forum. I have some CZ-6 and overall detecting related questions. I have had my Cz for several years and used to hunt fairly regularly but in the last 16 years, my wife has been chronically ill so the hunting time is at a minimum. Several years ago, my CZ-6 developed a short where the cable connects to the headphone jack. I sent it in for repairs and while it was in the shop, they must have decided to do an upgrade to the CZ-6A version. They changed out the male and female adaptor connections where the cable comes in from the coil. It was not until some time later that I decided to use my 10 1/2" coil and learned that the adaptor from that coil was not going to work due to a different pin set-up so now I have a 10 1/2" CZ-6 coil that is gathering dust. Since my time is limited for detecting, I was wondering if I should have it converted to the CZ-6A configuration or just ask about what would be a fair selling price as it is in excellent condition with a coil cover included. Any ideas from anyone would be appreciated.
One of my first finds was in my own yard. I was digging a lot of squared nails, all bent in a 90 degree angle which seemed very odd. In the middle of all of the nails, about 2" down, out popped a 1838-o seated liberty dime in VG condition. It was so shallow because a tree root had grown underneath and pushed it up.
Can anyone recommend a good overall hand digger? I have used the basic garden style digger and a knife to cut plugs. If I can get time, I would like to get back into detecting but my line of work has caused carpal tunnel syndrome.
Thanks to all who care to comment.

I don't know if changing the coil connector is cost effective or not. Maybe a dealer who is a service rep or someone from the company can help.

I did use a garden digger broke a few, bent a few, others dulled quickly. I spent the money for a Predator. It cuts through the dirt and grass roots well, can handle smaller tree and shrub roots and looks like it will be pretty much indestructible. Not cheap, price rose recently to over $40. But if I lost mine, I'd buy another.

Very nice find with the seated dime!

CZ's still keep up with the modern machines in many ways and exceed most of them on salt water beaches.

changing the connector on the 10" coil is pretty simple. Check with Fisher and see if they will sell you the part or a local that can order yo the part. It is still a four wire connection they just went to the five pin connector because it's trouble free. take a look on your 8" coil to get the correct connections.

Large coil with the old 4 pin should be able to sell as are like hens teeth to find..Give Fisher a call rel getting it replaced if you plan to keep it and just getting the part from Fisher might be a plan but you would have to be handy with a soldering iron and proper wire hookup should be given to you by Fisher if they will indeed sell you a new connector.

What would be a fair price? I think I may just go ahead and sell it. It should fit all CZ-5 and CZ-6's if I recall.

All other CZ's take the 5 pin plug...Sort of an oddball coil but have seen this coil that fits all CZ's go for $65 TO $75...don't have a prayer what yours would go for as it only fits the CZ6 and could be like finding a needle in a haystack for a CZ6 owner as was made 16 years ago. Of course condition and if it has a coil cover come into play also....
remember pictures help sell so take this into consideration...

Thanks for the info, Dan-Pa. I do think I will sell it to someone with a CZ-6. It is in excellent shape with a coil cover so based on your experience, should $55 be a fair price? Of course, if someone needs pictures, I could e-mail some.

Thanks

I have a CZ6A. I'll buy your 10.5" coil for 55.00 usd. Let me know, and I'll send you an email to firm up details.

I just bought an old CZ6 (the one with a pigtail for headphone connection) I like to upgraded to a CZ6a, and like to know if you have pictures of the upgrade done to your CZ6. I like to remove the pigtail and replace the coil connection at the box, before i get a coil. seen some pictures of the actual upgrade can be of help to those that can not afford to send their unit to fisher for an upgrade. Or if anyone has a video and instructions on how to do the upgrade. If i do not do the upgrade them i will have to buy a used coil for the CZ6. Any help is welcome,.

I like to buy a used coil for an old CZ6. Anyone out there with an extra search coil, feel free to email me with the details.
One more thing, I am a newbie with metal detectors. What are the rules of the hobby, what location are no-no for metal detecting and which areas are okay to detect without getting into trouble with the laws. Any info is appreciated.

I don't know of any video's or diy sites for this procedure, I've researched both youtube and a Google. The coil connection is on one pc board, the CZ6 has two boards. It's not a complex job if can solder are careful and have the time to do the job right. Having a simple wiring diagram would be a big help for the conversion process. Inside the CZ there is TX / RX wire pairs. I have had two CZ6's over the years and have pondered converting them, however I decided not to bother with it because I ultimately ended up purchasing a CZ 5 or CZ 6a. I do have some photo's somewhere of a CZ6 coil pcb connections and can post them if needed. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. The photo of the CZ6 coil pcb connection could help some, if you could post the picture that would help. besides the headphone connection and the connection of the search coil from 4 to 5 pin, is there any other difference between the CZ6 and the CZ6a or CZ5? I would really appreciate to see a photo of a CZ6 converted to a CZ6, especially the section of the headphone and the search coil adaptation from 4 to 5 pin. Anyone out there with a converted CZ6 to CZ6a?

I am looking for a search coil for the old CZ6 (4 Pin).

Have you sold the search coil. i own a CZ6 but i do not have the coil. If you like to sell it o me that would be great. Let me know if you still have it and like to sell it.

This is the CZ6 pic I mentioned.
Headphone jack has 3 wires and conversion to a 1/4 jack looks straight forward.

Thanks for the picture. it clearly shows a cz6 with a 4 pin search coil connection. I will continue to see and see if i can find a picture of a CZ6a that has the 5 pin connection. Comparing these two (CZ6 and CZ6a) can be helpful to individuals like myself that like to convert the CZ6 to a CZ6a. Again thank you for the support. have a nice day.

That would help, I sold my CZ6, CZ5. A C6a, CZ5, CZ3d are probably the same type of connector arrangement. Red and black wire set are routed go right next to 2 power MOSFET's, that is probably the transmit side. HH
