Some basic Edge observations

I almost never go out to dig clad but yesterday after spending the morning doing what old retired guys do, in other words, meet at Bob Evans for breakfast  , the other two guys decided to go hit a site that specialized in battery money. It's an older site but the dirt is such that it never allowed the coins to sink to a depth to be safe from the early detectorists. :( It also doesn't have extreme amounts of iron present. My choice was to go detecting with them or go home and do housework. DUH!!! To spare you all the boring details, I'll just cut to the chase. First off, I discovered just how good the Edge has the resolution to tell a copper penny from a clad dime. It was absolutely flawless, at least in this soil and all were at or less than 6" deep. The Excel will do this pretty well also, but the Edge is better at catching the slight difference in conductivity. It also ID's a newer gold dollar (I can't spell that Indian chick's name  ) two numbers above a clad quarter in the ground. The Edge, particularly when cranked up (and understandably so), will hit on iron initially a little more than the Excel but with it's pinpoint system and ability to size the object, I get fooled with the Edge almost never. I gotta say I just love it's audio. They've struck a great balance with strong audio and modulated audio at depth. On the other side of the fence, the more I use this in older sites where the good stuff is deep, the more I know I'm not handicapping myself in the depth department either. Just a couple simple observations that sets the Edge apart from some of the others in it's sand box. :)

I know that the designer really worked on the audio on the Edge. Audio is something most folks would probably not think was so important in the overall scheme of things, but it really is nice on the ears. My buddy, only usted to a C$, notice that right off the bat.....
You were talking about the differences in like a penny & a clad dime. I had seen on another forum some folks were claiming the Edge could tell silver from clad too. Would U go that far? That may be true, but I know that's not something I ever claimed. Most of the colonial stuff I go after is deep & can have lower readings. Such as the British coin I posted reading +16 before I took some dirt away........

That the machine built on a coffe table in Texas can tell the date and mint mark on a coin at 24". That really raised the bar for Fisher! So just maybe the Edge CAN tell the difference!

I like the audio on the Edge as well. For some reason the standard "giveaway" Fisher phones did not seem to be a good matchup. Grabbed the Killer B's and all is well.

and they come in about two numbers above a clad dime. Right in between a clad dime and clad quarter signature. Dug a silver quarter and it comes in just above a clad quarter. I guess I forgot to report that last week. :drinking:

Troy Pros and have no complaints whatsoever. :D I also run the Sunrays which are the same as the KB's and they work well also. I usually donate the stock headphones to our club for hunt prizes or sell them locally cheap and they always make someone happy that hasn't tried the top tier phones. ;)

for 2 major reasons. I like 'em loud, & I'm very rough on my equipment & the folks at B&B (Killer B) have been great at repairing them for me as they are warranteed for life like all my detectors....this is huge. Not that they are breakable....I'm good at wrapping the cord around branches, dropping 'em, etc :stars:

I know I say this all the time, but maybe new users of the Edge need to know that weather it's a silver dime, penny, indian head, they won't always be 1 perfect number reading every time. The airtests I run are different in my soil usually. I can usually guess I have a coin by the "lock" or the crisp tone, but I usually don't attempt to guess what kind with the older site hunting I do. Plows turn coins sideways, or put them deep affecting the #. I guess coinshooting you can get pretty good at seperating clad from silver, or even as one guy mentioned doing....going "Quartering". A couple weekends ago I took a guy I work with & his 2 daughters to the park next to their house. He thought it would be fun to see them dig some coins. Using the Edge, it was pretty easy to guess & say "that's probably a nickle" , or "another quarter"......I was right most of the time. Except when I said that's a quarter & out flipped a silver bracelet :yikes: I bet the little girl's still wearing it........
