Soil quality

Hello,

I am new to detecting and have noticed in several posts that the subject of soil menerlization has come up often.
I live in Central Kentucky about 45 mins south east of Louisville. What I would like to know is how do you determin what type
of soil you are working with? I live out in the country and am surounded by open fields and tobaco fields.

I have a delta 4000 detector.

Do a ground ballance and see what the number is. High numbers tough mineralized iron hot rock filled soil. Medium numbers fair soil and low numbers low good soil. Under 40 down in teens and twenties is sand or beach sand soil.

The Delta doesn't have ground balancing capabilities... Not sure how you determine soil type otherwise - I'd actually be interested to know myself...
