Software finally installed. Now it won't see detector.

Morris Digger

New member
When I plug my detector into the computer, it doesn't recognize it.
I looked in the system devices and can't see it there.
The computer doesn't even make the Bing-Bong tones to say that
I've plugged something in.

What am I missing here??

Thanks!

I tried that. In fact, I found out that the USB ports wouldn't recognize ANY devices.

I rebooted the computer once again and it finally recognized the detector.

I came back here to report that all was well but as I was writing this, the USB failed again for no reason.

I can't believe I left the frustrations of my V3i for this.

You might want to sell it now then. If you're this frustrated already, the learning curve will likely push you over the edge.

That's really helpful. How is it my fault that it comes with lousy software?
I'm an Electronics Engineer. I have a bachelors degree in computer science.
I'm used to learning curves. I had no problem with the learning curve with
the V3i and I won't have one with the CTX-3030. That is, of course, if I can
get their software to work. (BTW, the frustrations I had with the V3i
was having 2 bad coils and having it back to the factory for two others

Sounds like your computer is the culprit, not the detector. What operating system are you running and has it been patched up to the latest drivers? Also how old is the hardware.

Just figured it out. It came with a bad USB cable. I tried a spare I had and now it's
connected and staying connected.

TheGeorgiaCanuck - To answer your question, I'm running Windows 7 Professional on a machine I built
myself that's only about 6 months old. I've never had any software or connection issues
until this point. Thanks for you suggestions. Much appreciated!!! :)

I've now been on hold for 48 minutes for tech support. I guess I'll just have them send me a
new USB cable.

*** Edited because I replied to the wrong person...

There has been quite a bit of trouble with the factory supplied cable ..Luckily any USB 2.0 Printer/Device Cable, Type A Male to Type B Male will work...Mine recenty quit working also.....Just send a emal to the service center explaing your problem and that a different cable fixed it and they will ship you a new cable....Ive gotten emails answered back from Minelab very promply, usually within an hour.... Include all information in your first email, problem, solution & your shipping information ....wildherre

Thanks wildherre,

I waited on hold for the tech support for an hour and then gave up and left a voicemail.
As you suggested, I will to send them an email with all the information.
Thanks for the help!!!

This info is to maybe prevent some more frustration with the CTX. After you have the CTX connected to the PC and have updated something (Modes, FPs, WPs, Etc.) in the CTX, and you have completed whatever you were doing in the CTX, go thru the proper method of removing a connected device. Once it's okay to disconnect the CTX, DO NOT TURN OFF THE CTX. Leave it on, unplug the USB cable, and then the CTX will go thru it's updating process for whatever work you did. Once the updating has completed, the CTX will come on and the display will appear with the normal operating screen and tone. If you turn off the CTX before the update is complete, obviously the updates will not be completed and won't show up. It's not earth shattering info. but there have been a lot of first time uses of the XChange2 software that didn't know why the updates to Modes (or whatever) didn't show up in their CTX.

I don't agree the software is lousy... If I recall we have only seen it flagged as a virus a couple of times.

C&RHunter - Thank you! That will be some good info for me to keep in mind.

Everyone Else - Sorry about expressing my frustration in such an extreme way. I've got a lot
going on. While I was working on this I was also tearing people up at the company I hired to
build a pole building. It was started in May and I was told a couple weeks. They're still trying
to get it right. I know it's not an excuse for bashing the software or being rude but that's the
best I have. :)

we all have frustrating times in our lives I hope yours gets better soon. Going out and swinging the coil and finding treasure usually calms me down

You are correct. As I mentioned in the previous strings of posts regarding Morris Digger's troubles, BitDefender doesn't recognize 4 digit strings, and flags them as potential viruses. There was one other report with a person using AVG. Having a bad USB cord is a problem. But neither reflect on the functionality of the software for XChange2, or the detector's capabilities.
